Do At-Home Beauty Devices Actually Work? A Cosmetic Nurse's Verdict
From glowing LED masks to microcurrent wands, cosmetic nurse Sarah Donaldson separates the clinically proven from the cleverly marketed.

You've seen the mask. The one that makes some actress look lit from within, sitting on every For You page beside a price tag that could easily fund a weekend getaway. Somewhere between the glowing testimonials and the checkout button, a reasonable doubt creeps in: does any of this actually do anything?
The honest answer is: some do, some don't. Knowing the difference often comes down to understanding the technology behind the device rather than the marketing surrounding it. So we went to someone who spends her days on the other side of that promise. Sarah Donaldson — better known as Nurse SarahLouise, a cosmetic registered nurse and founder of The Business Injection, with 14 years' experience in medical aesthetics, explains which technologies have the strongest evidence behind them, what consumers should realistically expect, and what to look for before buying.
First, the two types of gadget you're choosing between
Strip away the branding and almost every at-home skin device is one of just two things:
• Light devices — the LED masks and red-light panels and handhelds all over your feed. You wear or hold them, and they bathe your skin in coloured light: red and near-infrared for repair, radiance and fine lines, and blue for breakouts. There's no sensation and nothing to do — you just sit with the light on for a few minutes.
• Microcurrent devices — a handheld wand you glide over your face. It sends a tiny, painless electric current that gently “works out” the muscles underneath, giving a temporarily firmer, more lifted, more sculpted look.
Beyond these, you'll also find radiofrequency and ultrasound devices, each designed to work in different ways. However, LED and microcurrent remain two of the most widely available categories for home use.
What actually works — and what's mostly marketing
In Donaldson's view, both technologies have a growing body of clinical research supporting certain applications — with one big asterisk about those viral masks. “Microcurrent and red and near-infrared light therapy have the most credible evidence base,” she says, and she's careful to describe what that evidence actually shows rather than what the box promises. Light therapy “genuinely supports cellular activity, collagen synthesis, and inflammation reduction when the device is built to clinical specifications.”
The surprise is where light devices shine brightest: not on wrinkles, but on spots. The blue-and-red combination (at 415 and 633 nanometres — wavelengths worth checking in the product specifications) “has real peer-reviewed support for reducing Cutibacterium acnes and calming inflammatory lesions,” she explains —a bacterium associated with acne. Microcurrent, meanwhile, “genuinely improves facial tone and definition with consistent use.”
So what's the asterisk? The LED masks flooding your feed are light devices too, and Donaldson says the underlying technology has scientific support, but adds that consumer expectations are often shaped by ambitious marketing.
What results should you realistically expect?
Say you've bought a device that works. The next question is the honest one: how much of a difference, and how soon? Donaldson says the results are often more modest—and slower to appear—than marketing materials suggest. With a light device, realistic results are “gradual improvements in skin tone, texture, and inflammation over a minimum of eight to twelve weeks of consistent daily or near-daily use.” Acne tends to clear faster, because you're fighting active bacteria rather than waiting on collagen. And microcurrent's lift is “visible within a few weeks but requires ongoing use to maintain, because you are essentially exercising facial muscles rather than creating a structural change” — stop using it, and the effect fades, much like skipping the gym.
Her summary is worth taping to your mirror: “The honest answer to ‘how long’ is usually longer than the brand suggests. And the honest answer to ‘how much’ is usually more modest than the before-and-after images imply.”
Where expectations and reality don't always match
It's less about any single gadget than about a promise. The biggest mistake consumers make, she says, is “devices that are marketed as clinical alternatives when they are simply not.” One patient came to her after spending thousands on a premium at-home device, believing it would deliver results comparable to biostimulators, non-surgical injectables or even a facelift, because her expectations were based on the claims she'd seen.
And that patient, she stresses, is not a one-off: "This isn't an isolated case," she says. "Many consumers are investing in these products without having the clinical knowledge to assess the claims being made."
What to look for before buying
You can screen out most of the hype yourself, before you spend a dirham. It comes down to whether a brand will actually show you its numbers. Donaldson's checklist is technical, not aspirational — look for:
• A clearly published wavelength — 630–660nm for red light, 810–850nm for near-infrared. If those specifications aren't available, it's worth asking why.
• Power density (in mW/cm²) — because “a device emitting the right wavelength at insufficient power will not penetrate to a depth that produces meaningful results.” Right light, too weak, no result.
• For microcurrent, a stated microampere output plus independent clinical studies “rather than brand-commissioned testimonials.”
• FDA clearance (where applicable) or CE marking can be useful indicators that a device has met certain regulatory requirements, although neither guarantees clinical effectiveness.
Her single best tell for spin: "Brands that clearly publish these specifications make it easier for consumers to assess what they're buying." In other words, if a page is all soft lighting and lifestyle shots and no specifications, keep scrolling.
The people who should be careful
A quick but important caveat: Although generally designed for home use, these devices aren't suitable for everyone. Anyone with a photosensitive condition, a history of skin cancer, or who takes photosensitising medication should consult a healthcare professional before using LED devices. Blue-light treatments should never be used without proper eye protection, and microcurrent devices are generally not recommended during pregnancy or for people with pacemakers.
One caution lands especially close to home for Dubai's tweakment crowd: If you've had dermal fillers recently, check with your treating practitioner before using radiofrequency or ultrasound devices.
Your mask won't replace the clinic — and that's fine
It's tempting to hope a pricey home device saves you the appointment altogether. Donaldson says that's the wrong way to look at it, because the two aren't playing the same game. In-clinic devices “operate at energy levels, penetration depths, and treatment precision that consumer devices are not designed or permitted to match.” Where a home tool genuinely earns its keep is between visits — to “maintain and extend the results of professional treatments.” Her way of putting it is the line to remember: “The clinic builds the foundation, and the home device maintains it, and any brand suggesting otherwise is likely to create unrealistic expectations.”
If you only buy one thing, make it this
Asked where she'd spend a limited budget, Donaldson doesn't hesitate — “a quality red and near-infrared light therapy device from a brand that publishes its clinical specifications clearly.” Donaldson says red and near-infrared light therapy currently has one of the strongest evidence bases among home-use devices. Her rule of thumb doubles as the smartest way to shop the whole category: “A mid-range device from a transparent brand is likely to be a better investment than a premium-priced device from a brand that leads with lifestyle imagery and withholds its technical specifications.”
And that 'longevity' label on everything? Read it carefully
Finally, a word on that wellness-era buzzword now stamped across every product page. Donaldson genuinely welcomes the shift “away from correction towards prevention and long-term cellular health.” She worries that the language of “longevity” and “healthy ageing” is being “applied freely to products with limited clinical evidence supporting many of those claims.” The biology it borrows from — collagen stimulation, cellular repair — is real, but it only happens with “the right wavelengths, the right power output, the right consistency, and realistic timeframes.”
"Consumers should be cautious about longevity claims that aren't supported by publicly available clinical evidence." As with any skincare investment, transparency and realistic expectations matter far more than viral marketing.
