You have scrolled through a beauty feed in the past year, you have met PDRN — usually under its more clickable alias, the "salmon DNA" facial. It has been the whispered secret behind red-carpet glow, the star of clinic menus from Seoul to Dubai, and the subject of a thousand explainer videos. This August, it graduated to the vanity table: Dior has folded the ingredient into its reformulated Capture serum, Hyalushot Advanced, complete with a new "PDRN-Shot." When a house of Dior's stature adopts an active, a trend has officially become a category. So it is worth asking the question everyone is Googling: what is PDRN, really — and does putting it in a bottle actually do anything?
So, what is PDRN?
PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide — a mouthful that simply means short, purified fragments of DNA. Traditionally those fragments are extracted from salmon or trout sperm, which sounds alarming until you learn the reason it works: salmon DNA is roughly 98% similar to human DNA. That biological near-match is the whole point. Once purified of proteins and other material, what remains is so compatible with our own cells that the skin treats it not as a foreign invader but as raw building material. It is a regenerative ingredient, in the most literal sense.
The science underneath the marketing is genuinely interesting. The pairing is telling: 2026's most credible formulas are not single-hero products but synergistic systems, where two actives are chosen to amplify each other. A regenerative fragment to signal repair, a featherweight humectant to plump and hydrate — on paper, a smart marriage.

For readers weighing whether it is worth it, a plant-based PDRN also sidesteps two friction points of the salmon-derived original: the ick factor, and the concerns of anyone avoiding animal-derived ingredients.
