- Rave Roams: 48 Hours in Doha
A 48-hour journey through Doha's dialogue between preserved heritage and ambitious modern architecture. Rave Roams: 48 Hours in Doha A 48-hour journey through Doha's dialogue between preserved heritage and ambitious modern architecture. by Khadija Husain 24 Nov 2025 For the global traveller, Doha is often a sun-drenched blur outside an airplane window, a quiet pause before another destination . Yet treating Qatar’s capital as a layover means missing one of the most fascinating urban stories unfolding today. In just forty-eight hours , Doha unfolds as a breathtaking dialogue between a deeply preserved past and a fiercely ambitious future. It’s a city that wears its Bedouin soul beneath a skyline of sci-fi silhouettes, and a weekend here is less a stop and more an immersion. We arrived with a mission to discover if the essence of a nation could be tasted in two days. The answer is yes, and the discovery was far richer than we expected. First Look Doha welcomes with presence rather than noise . From the moment you leave the airport, the city feels like a compelling argument between past and future, played out in limestone and glass. The air, hot and dry, carries the scent of the Arabian Gulf and, if you catch it right, the distant, sweet smell of oud from a souq. What struck me most was the city’s devotion to detail. Qatar is a nation of meticulous curation. It notices the smallest things and edits its urban landscape with precision. The streetlamps are quite works of art, and the soft detailing of the lights makes the city easy on the eyes. Nothing is flashy, yet everything feels intentional and harmonious, leaving you calm without realising why. In forty-eight hours, you do not simply see Doha. You feel the country shaping its next chapter with patience and pride. Stay Andaz Doha Check in at the Andaz Doha , in West Bay, a design-led hotel where the lobby feels more like a curated gallery than a traditional hotel entrance. Part of the Hyatt portfolio, its prime location makes exploring a breeze, with most key destinations just a short taxi ride away. T he hotel is a hub for creativity and discovery. Whether seeking relaxation, inspiration, or an unforgettable social scene, Andaz is an ideal base to uncover a unique and unscripted hospitality experience. Day 1 Morning: Begin gently rather than rushing. Book the ninety-minute signature body massage at Alara Spa inside Andaz Doha. This treatment is the ultimate urban reset, preparing you to fully absorb the city's wonders. National Museum of Qatar Next, take a short taxi to the National Museum of Qatar. Designed by Jean Nouvel and shaped like a desert rose, the building itself is breathtaking . Inside, the galleries are an immersive, cinematic journey through Qatar’s history . I lingered at the Pearl Carpet of Baroda, which glimmers with millions of gems and the galleries tracing the nation’s evolution from a pearling community to a modern powerhouse felt especially poignant. Afternoon: A short stroll away from the National Museum of Qatar, there is the beautiful Mina District, also known as the Old Port. For lunch, embrace the portside atmosphere. The Mina District has several charming cafés by the marina and restaurants with terraces overlooking the pastel buildings . It’s the perfect spot for a leisurely meal, watching the boats and enjoying the gentle sea breeze before the afternoon heat peaks. Mina District Evening: As the day begins to fade, make your way to the Museum of Islamic Art. While its collection is world-class, go for the view. The vista from the museum’s park grounds, encompassing the Doha Cruise Terminal and the entire West Bay skyline bathed in golden light, is unforgettable. From there, dive into the vibrant chaos of Souq Waqif as it comes to life under the stars. The souq is a living marketplace full of scents, sounds, colours and stories. Embrace the sensory overload, it's all part of the charm. The air is thick with the scent of spices, oud, and roasting coffee. Museum of Islamic Art Peek inside the Falcon Souq, where these magnificent birds are cared for with quiet reverence. A uniquely Qatari experience that feels almost ceremonial. Try a small sweet Qatari dessert from a street vendor as you wander. For dinner, head to Al Bandar Restaurant, where the terrace is lively and the food deeply satisfying. Grilled meats, fresh hummus and people watching make the evening feel joyful and real. Afterwards, walk to Al Aker Sweets for their warm kunafa. The queue is long, but the first bite of the syrupy dessert makes every moment worth it. Souq Waqif end the night with a drive through Msheireb Downtown , to witness its innovative architecture illuminated by mesmerising colour-changing lights. It is a stunning vision of a sustainable urban future where the streets are impeccably clean and the silence between the lights is strangely soothing. Day 2 Morning: Start the morning at The Pearl-Qatar , an artificial island known for its luxurious marinas and residences. Explore Qanat Quartier , a picturesque district inspired by Venice, with, brightly coloured buildings and its Venetian-style canals, and footbridges, it felt like a piece of Italy had been artfully dropped into the Arabian Gulf. It's a fantastic photo opportunity . A stop at Volume Café, a haven for bibliophiles and art lovers, provided the perfect coffee break in a uniquely serene setting. Qanat Quartier with a view of Lusail's skyscappers Then take a drive to Lusail, the city of the future. See the sheer scale of the infrastructure, the stunning Lusail stadium , and marvel at the futuristic skyline, which includes the iconic, twisting towers that have become a symbol of Qatar's ambition. The Marina Promenade is also known for its lively food truck scene, offering a casual lunch option with a view. You may also spot the Al Maha Island development and the majestic Place Vendome from the car, which hints at Qatar’s grand vision. Blue mosque in Katara Cultural Village Afternoon: Next, explore the Katara Cultural Village . I t is not a village as much as a cultural universe. Walk through the amphitheatre, imagine a performance under the open sky and observe the tile work at the Blue Mosque. The complex has galleries, cafes, mosques and a quiet beach. It expresses Doha’s desire to become a global cultural centre. Enjoy lunch at Feeh Al Afia within Katara for a comforting meal. Evening: As the evening set, head to Villaggio Mall. Yes, a mall. But this is no ordinary shopping centre. Famous for its painted blue-sky ceiling and indoor canal system, it feels like stepping into a dreamy, Venetian-inspired fantasy world. Watching gondolas drift past storefronts is surreal and oddly charming . It’s a testament to Qatar's "why not?" attitude. Conclude your day with a reflective walk along the Doha Corniche, the city’s elegant promenade. For your farewell dinner choose SMAT, where the view and atmosphere offer a final taste of Doha’s character. Villaggio Mall If You Have a Day 3 Island Escape: For ultimate relaxation before your flight, take a 25-minute catamaran to Banana Island Resort. Spend a half-day lounging on the private beach or swimming in the lagoon. Retail Therapy: If you prefer, explore the opulent Al Hazm Mall or the vast Mall of Qatar for some last-minute shopping. For Culture & Architecture Enthusiasts : Visit Education City to see the breathtaking Qatar National Library. Then, explore the unique collection at the Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum, which offers a fascinating glimpse into a private collector's mind. Conclusion Across forty-eight hours, Doha reveals its heart. It is proud of its history and bold about its future. My favourite moments came from the contrasts. the quiet ritual of the spa set against the electric buzz of the souq, the ancient dhows drifting across from razor-sharp skyscrapers. The city surprises with gentleness and ambition at the same time. Doha does not need your week. It simply needs your willingness to show you how much it can offer in a short, luxuriously-paced escape. So, on your next journey, turn your layover into a launchpad for discovery. Give it two days, and it will stay with you far longer. Royal Camel Parade on the lawns in front of the Amiri Diwan, opposite Souq Waqif What I Wish I Knew Before Going Plan Around the Heat: The sun from 11 am to 3 pm is intense. Schedule indoor activities (museums, malls, long lunches) for this period. Villaggio Mall is an Experience: It’s fascinating, bizarre, and worth seeing even if you’re not a shopper. Weekends are Friday-Saturday: This affects opening hours. Many places open later on Fridays. I nsider Tip: Don't just walk through Souq Waqif; pop into the art galleries. They are fantastic and offer a quiet respite from the main thoroughfares. And always accept the offer of Karak chai! What I Loved Most Sunset at the Museum of Islamic Art: Watching the sun dip below the horizon, painting the West Bay skyline in hues of gold and pink from the MIA’s panoramic windows, was a spiritual experience. The Massage at Alara Spa in Andaz Doha: A moment of perfect peace The Nocturnal Magic of Msheireb: Seeing the buildings shift colours as I walked through the impeccably clean, futuristic streets after dark. Kunafa at Al Aker Sweets: Joining the long, patient queue at Souq Waqif was a rite of passage. The first bite of the warm, cheesy, syrupy dessert was worth every second of the wait. Tips for Travellers Time-Saving Advice: Group your explorations by geography. Day 1 focuses on the Souq Waqif/MIA/Mina area, while Day 2 covers the Pearl, Lusail, and Katara, which are all in the northern part of the city. Best Season: October to April. The winter months offer perfect, sunny, mid-20s°C (70s°F) weather. The summer (May-Sept) is extremely hot and humid. Transport: Taxis are plentiful and have short waiting times on hailing taxi apps like Uber, Careem. The Doha Metro is highly recommended for key destinations. Money: Credit cards are widely accepted. It’s always useful to have some Qatari Riyals (QR) for the souq and smaller vendors. Cultural Etiquette : Dress modestly in public areas out of respect. Shoulders and knees should be covered. Resorts, hotels, and malls are more relaxed

Together, they are introducing an unparalleled cultural experience at ExecuJet’s flagship terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC), offering discerning travellers an invitation to immerse themselves in the world of contemporary art before they take to the skies. This unique collaboration brings a touch of cultural sophistication to the aviation experience, with a curated selection of fine art thoughtfully integrated into ExecuJet's terminal. For travellers accustomed to the finest things in life, the space has been transformed into an art gallery where each masterpiece elevates the already luxurious environment. Now, passengers can explore striking artworks by celebrated international artists as they wait for their private flights, blending the thrill of travel with moments of reflection and inspiration. At the heart of this collaboration lies a collection of works chosen to resonate with the refined sensibilities of ExecuJet’s clientele. Carefully curated by Opera Gallery, the selection boasts 17 pieces by 11 artists, including renowned figures like Kenny Scharf, Stephan Marienfeld, Reza Derakshani, and Manolo Valdés. These contemporary masterpieces grace the terminal's sleek, modern design, turning the lounge area into a sanctuary where guests can engage with art before embarking on their journey. Notable pieces include Scharf’s stunning seven-meter painting We’re Melting Together Night and Day , which commands attention with its vibrant colors and bold style, and Marienfeld’s Blow Up , a monumental sculpture that introduces a sense of tension and expansion with its intricate curves. Meanwhile, Derakshani’s floral-themed paintings offer serenity, while Valdés’s Reina Mariana gleams with elegance, setting a graceful tone as it greets guests upon arrival. Dumani Ndebele, Regional FBO Director at ExecuJet Middle East, emphasizes the significance of the partnership: “At ExecuJet, we continually seek to redefine what luxury means for our clients. Our partnership with Opera Gallery brings together art and aviation, creating an environment that elevates the travel experience beyond convention and into the realm of cultural sophistication.” This artistic transformation is not just about beautifying the space but about offering an immersive experience that appeals to the cultured traveller. The gallery experience is exclusive to ExecuJet’s passengers, offering them a private viewing of remarkable artworks that provide a moment of calm and contemplation before their flight. Every piece is strategically placed within the terminal’s architecture, allowing guests to fully appreciate the beauty and depth of the art as they relax in the luxurious surroundings. Opera Gallery’s Director, Sylvain Gaillard, shares his excitement about the collaboration: “This particular collaboration has been very exciting because it stems from an organic discussion with ExecuJet. The gallery was involved from the very beginning, and we instantly knew that the art elements would elevate the entire experience. With this curated selection of artists and works, we’ve created a high-quality panorama of contemporary art that resonates with the shared guest profiles of both Opera Gallery and ExecuJet.” Beyond the art itself, the ExecuJet terminal is a work of art in its own right. Designed by architect Gregory Gatserelia and enhanced by renowned designer Nada Debs, the terminal exudes exclusivity with its stunning blend of contemporary architecture and Middle Eastern influences. Luxurious Italian furnishings from Giorgetti, Minotti, and Poltrona Frau further elevate the space, creating an atmosphere of sophisticated comfort where guests feel both at home and inspired. Every detail, from plush seating to ambient lighting, is designed to enhance the passenger experience, making each moment at the terminal feel extraordinary. For ExecuJet Middle East, this collaboration is a milestone in their commitment to offering more than just private flights but curated experiences that redefine luxury travel. By merging fine art with aviation, the company has created a space where the boundaries between art and travel blur, offering a refined, elevated experience for the discerning traveller. This unprecedented collaboration between ExecuJet and Opera Gallery represents a new frontier in luxury travel. As the world of private aviation continues to evolve, this initiative stands out as a shining example of how cultural sophistication can be seamlessly integrated into the travel experience. With every brushstroke, every sculpture, and every detail of the terminal, ExecuJet and Opera Gallery have created an experience that promises to inspire and elevate the journeys of those who are fortunate enough to pass through this extraordinary space.

- Coffeemania: Moscow’s Cult Café Arrives at Dubai Hills Mall
Coffeemania, Moscow's cult café, opens its first UAE outpost at Dubai Hills Mall — here's the menu, the famous Raf coffee and everything to expect. Coffeemania: Moscow’s Cult Café Arrives at Dubai Hills Mall Coffeemania, Moscow's cult café, opens its first UAE outpost at Dubai Hills Mall — here's the menu, the famous Raf coffee and everything to expect. by Sienna Vale 25 Nov 2025 Coffeemania, a name long woven into Moscow’s dining culture, is opening its first international outpost, and Dubai is its chosen starting point. The restaurant will open on 28 November 2025 at Dubai Hills Mall, bringing its familiar blend of refined comfort food and coffee craft to the UAE. For more than two decades, Coffeemania has held a steady place in Russia’s dining scene. Known for approachable dishes prepared with a certain precision, it has built a reputation that sits somewhere between casual dining and something more considered. The Dubai opening marks a new chapter for the brand as it steps into a city that understands design, food, and the pleasure of spending time well. Coffeemania’s menu arrives with many of the dishes that shaped its identity. Expect the straightforward staples such as a clean Caesar, an Olivier done the traditional way, and the Pozharsky cutlet that regulars swear by. Beef Stroganoff and other comfort-heavy plates round out the selection. The pastry section, led by Head Pastry Chef Elena Zheleznyakova, brings a more delicate touch. Her layered Honey Cake (Smetannik) remains one of the brand’s most recognised desserts and will feature on the Dubai menu. Coffee still sits at the heart of the experience. As the birthplace of the original Raf, Coffeemania keeps its approach simple and exacting. Beans are roasted in-house, and the drinks are prepared by baristas trained through its long-established coffee programme, ensuring each cup stays consistent and traceable from start to finish. The 500 m² space has been designed by Studio APAA under lead designer Alexey Penyuk. The interior leans into warm woods, soft natural stone, and a restrained palette that complements the large Murano glass installation by Hannes Peer suspended overhead. Gio Ponti-inspired mosaic flooring and touches of Carrara marble and Breccia stone give the room a subtle texture without overwhelming the space. Custom seating, Italian leather details, and lighting by names such as Charlotte Perriand add a quiet sense of craft. The result is a room that feels polished but relaxed. A place intended for unhurried visits rather than quick stops. Coffeemania has also partnered with RARARES Gallery to introduce rotating works from both regional and international artists. Pieces by Tatiana Chursina, Ruslan Gudiev, and Emirati artist Fatma Lootah will be part of the opening curation, giving the restaurant an added cultural layer. Behind the kitchen is Brand Chef Alexey Petrichenko, whose experience spans Michelin-starred restaurants in France and Sweden. The coffee programme is overseen by Gleb Neveykin who is the creator of the original Raf Coffee, along with long-time specialists Irina Puzachkova and Varvara Stukalo. Their combined experience shapes what the brand hopes will be a familiar yet elevated version of the dining room it built back home. Coffeemania’s arrival in Dubai signals the start of its wider international expansion. For Dubai Hills Mall, it adds a new all-day dining option anchored in consistency, craftsmanship, and a calm approach to hospitality. Location: Ground Floor, Entrance 1, Dubai Hills Mall Opening: 28 November 2025

Presented by the Design Council Abu Dhabi (DCAD) in collaboration with Italian porcelain house Ginori 1735, and produced by Gushcloud International, this second residency cycle positions the capital as a meeting point between tradition and innovation. Hosted at the creative workshop MAKE, it brings together the craftsmanship of the Emirates with the timeless artistry of Italy. “ We are proud to facilitate this partnership and continue fostering a world-class creative ecosystem in Abu Dhabi, ” shares Althea Lim, Group CEO and Co-Founder of Gushcloud International. “ This residency reinforces the region’s role in global design dialogue and offers real pathways for talent to emerge on the world stage. ” Guided under the chairwomanship of Her Highness Shaikha Shamsa Bint Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, DCAD remains committed to empowering a new generation of designers. Its programs are rooted in sustainability and innovation while celebrating the UAE’s cultural heritage a balance between legacy and modernity that defines the region’s creative identity. This new residency invites 10–15 UAE nationals and residents, men and women, who are already practicing or exploring ceramics and pottery. Over six months, participants will immerse themselves in a curriculum spanning studio practice, sustainability, design theory, and masterclasses. A highlight includes a two-hour session with Ginori 1735’s Creative Director, offering insights into the Italian house’s approach to design excellence. The program is more than training it is a journey of storytelling through clay. Each resident will create an original ceramic collection inspired by both Emirati and Italian traditions, a dialogue between two cultures shaped into tangible form. The journey culminates in a Capstone Exhibition in late 2026, where works will be unveiled to the press, patrons, and collectors. For select residents, the opportunity extends beyond Abu Dhabi with an internship at Ginori 1735’s headquarters in Florence, a chance to step into the heart of European craftsmanship. With governance led by Undersecretary Rana El Khoury, Vice Chairwoman Nadine Maalouf, and advisory members including Rym Al Falasy, Asma Al Fahim, Meera Al Suwaidi, and Rima Al Mokarrab, DCAD’s commitment is clear: nurturing creative talent while positioning Abu Dhabi as a global stage for design. The residency is not only a step forward for the UAE’s creative economy, it is a reminder that design is as much about heritage as it is about the future. And in the hands of the next generation of ceramicists, stories will continue to be told, shaped, and preserved in clay. Applications for the program are now open at www.dcad.ae .
