- What Does the UAE Smell Like? One Perfumer Has a Beautiful Answer
From desert dunes to sun-warmed courtyards, one perfumer distills the scent of home into something deeply personal. RAVE asks what the UAE actually smells like. What Does the UAE Smell Like? One Perfumer Has a Beautiful Answer From desert dunes to sun-warmed courtyards, one perfumer distills the scent of home into something deeply personal. RAVE asks what the UAE actually smells like. by Khadija Husain 14 Jan 2026 Close your eyes. Breathe in. What scent rises from the dunes, the souks, the soaring glass towers, and sun-warmed courtyards of home? For most, it’s an abstract question. For one perfumer, it is deeply personal — a true scent of home, intimate and welcoming. This is the story of Sultan Abdulla, chairman of Dubai-based Lootah Perfumes. For him, that question is not poetic musing; it is the foundation of his life’s work. His legacy unfolds in wisps of smoky bukhoor and the deep resonance of aged oud. It begins not with a single note, but with a memory. It smells of warmth, of golden-hour light filtering through a majlis — specifically, the scent of freshly lit bukhoor in his grandmother’s home. “The house came alive with warmth as she placed the first chip on the coal,” he recalls. “It was the signal that guests were welcome.” In that aromatic cloud of oud and resins, a young boy learned that fragrance was more than scent; it was emotion, hospitality, and identity. Sultan’s guiding philosophy, inherited directly from those rituals, is simple: “Fragrance is not a product, it is a gesture.” Watching his grandmother prepare bukhoor with the intention of choosing ingredients that carried stories, memories, and blessings — taught him that scent is a form of generosity, a way to honour both space and visitor. That belief became the beating heart of a modern perfume house. “I remember evenings when the family gathered to shape bukhoor by hand,” Sultan shares. “There was a rhythm to it. Each step carried responsibility. Those moments taught me that our craft is a legacy, not a business.” It is this respect for raw materials, for the hands that work them, for the stories they hold that elevates Lootah beyond ornamentation into the realm of cultural preservation. Today, Sultan translates this sensory heritage into a contemporary olfactory language, asking the world to reconsider what Gulf fragrance can be. If you think you know Middle Eastern perfumery, dense, potent expressions of rose and oud — Lootah Perfumes invites you to look closer, and feel deeper. How does one carry the warmth of a grandmother’s ritual into a fragrance meant for the world? The answer lies in balance. “Tradition is our anchor, innovation is our movement, and authenticity is the bridge between the two,” Sultan explains. Here, the iconic notes of the region — the soulful depth of oud, the warmth of amber, and the soft embrace of rose are not treated as relics. They are reorchestrated, becoming the vocabulary of a new, confident dialogue. Every creation begins with feeling. “It often starts with a story, a memory we want to translate into scent,” he says. The emotion comes first; the ingredients follow. This method births scents that are both deeply familiar and thrillingly new. This philosophy comes alive across Lootah’s collections. In the Bukhoor line, Palomino Bukhoor pays homage to the ceremonial warmth of his grandmother’s craft, now refined for contemporary living. In contrast, Lava Oud, which Sultan describes as the embodiment of the “Dubai scent”, captures the city’s bold, modern, and unapologetic confidence. It presents oud not as tradition preserved in amber, but as energy in motion. Oud, which Sultan calls “the note that brings me home,” is reimagined not as a symbol of the past, but as a living, breathing force. Lootah Perfumes also reflects a broader shift in how we relate to scent today. “People are looking for meaning,” Sultan observes. “They want fragrance that aligns with who they are. It’s become a form of self-expression, almost a signature.” That sense of connection is the experience he hopes to offer. “I want people to feel linked to a memory, a moment, or a version of themselves,” he says. To leave not with something they purchased, but something they recognised. The goal is not to sell fantasy, but to reveal truth. Looking ahead, Sultan Abdulla’s vision is precise and deeply personal. He hopes Lootah Perfumes will be remembered as “the house that carried Emirati perfumery into the future without losing its soul.” If his grandmother’s bukhoor once signalled that guests were welcome, then his fragrances are an invitation to the world, to experience the UAE not as a postcard, as a deeply felt, emotionally layered landscape. His ambition is quietly personal: “when someone leaves, they carry a scent they truly relate to, one that reflects who they are and how they want to feel.” It is the creation of belonging. As he distils it into a single sentence: “Emirati perfumery is the art of welcoming — a fragrant expression of heritage, generosity, and timeless elegance.” So, what does the UAE smell like? Through the lens of Sultan Abdulla, it smells of timeless welcome and bold tomorrows. It is the scent of heritage exhaled with a modern breath. The house stands as a beautiful contradiction: deeply rooted yet forward-looking, intimate yet expansive. At Lootah Perfumes , you are always welcome. - Why Slugging Became Beauty’s Biggest Barrier-Care Obsession
Slugging went viral on TikTok, but the barrier-repair science behind it is decades old. RAVE unpacks what the trend actually does for skin, who should skip it, and how modern formulas are reinventing the classic occlusive routine. Why Slugging Became Beauty’s Biggest Barrier-Care Obsession Slugging went viral on TikTok, but the barrier-repair science behind it is decades old. RAVE unpacks what the trend actually does for skin, who should skip it, and how modern formulas are reinventing the classic occlusive routine. by Sara Al Farsi 17 May 2026 Every few months, the beauty world finds a new skincare ritual to obsess over. A few years ago, it was glass skin. Then came skin cycling, face icing, salmon sperm facials, and enough barrier-repair serums to fill an entire shelf at Sephora. Now? It’s slugging — the unapologetically greasy nighttime skincare method that has somehow become both a dermatologist favourite and TikTok’s latest skincare fixation. Despite the slightly alarming name, slugging is far less complicated than it sounds. At its core, slugging is the practice of sealing your skincare in with an occlusive layer, most commonly petroleum jelly, as the final step of your nighttime routine. Think of it less as adding hydration and more as trapping everything underneath it, preventing water loss while your skin repairs itself overnight. The result? Skin that looks calmer, softer, and noticeably more rested by morning. But before you reach for Vaseline and coat your face like a glazed doughnut, there’s a little more nuance to the trend than social media would have you believe. So, What Exactly Is Slugging? The technique itself isn’t new. In fact, dermatologists have recommended occlusive healing ointments for decades, especially for compromised skin barriers, eczema flare-ups, or severe dryness. What changed is the packaging around it. TikTok gave it a name, turned it into an aesthetic, and suddenly everyone was filming their glossy nighttime routines under warm bathroom lighting. The science behind it is simple: during sleep, your skin naturally loses moisture through transepidermal water loss. Occlusives like petroleum jelly create a seal over the skin, helping reduce that evaporation while allowing your barrier to recover. It’s why slugging tends to work especially well for people dealing with dryness, dehydration, flaking, over-exfoliation, retinol irritation, and compromised skin barriers. Essentially, it’s less about achieving “glass skin” and more about repairing skin that’s tired, stressed, or stripped. Why Beauty Editors Are Paying Attention The interesting thing about slugging is that it arrives at a moment when the beauty industry itself is shifting. For years, skincare routines became increasingly aggressive — stronger acids, higher percentages, more exfoliation, more steps, more actives. Skin was constantly being treated, resurfaced, and corrected. Now, the conversation has moved toward barrier health. Suddenly, “less but better” skincare feels more aspirational than a 14-step routine. Slugging fits perfectly into that mood. It’s not glamorous. It’s not particularly photogenic in real life. But it works — and beauty consumers today are increasingly prioritising results over aesthetic packaging. There’s also something quietly nostalgic about it. Many people are rediscovering products their mothers and grandmothers used long before luxury skincare became saturated with peptides and patented complexes. Petroleum jelly has existed in medicine cabinets forever. The beauty industry simply repackaged it for a new generation. But Slugging Isn’t For Everyone This is where TikTok tends to oversimplify things. If your skin is acne-prone, oily, or congestion-prone, heavy slugging can sometimes trigger breakouts — particularly if you’re sealing in pore-clogging products underneath. Occlusives themselves aren’t necessarily comedogenic for everyone, but trapping heat, oil, and bacteria overnight can become problematic depending on your skin type. The same goes for active ingredients. Applying retinoids or strong acids underneath a thick occlusive layer may intensify irritation because the ingredients penetrate more deeply. Dermatologists often recommend avoiding slugging on nights when using stronger actives, especially if your skin is sensitive. In other words, slugging is a treatment, not a personality trait. What’s interesting now is how beauty brands are evolving the idea beyond traditional petroleum jelly. Today’s version of slugging feels more elevated, ceramide-rich overnight masks, barrier creams, sleeping balms, occlusive moisturisers infused with skincare actives, cushion-like “skin sealing” creams designed for overnight recovery. Consumers still want the protective effect, but in formulas that feel more breathable, refined, and appealing than a thick layer of ointment. Few people actually want to sleep looking like they dipped their face into engine oil. From Pharmacy Staple to Modern Barrier Care Long before “slugging” became TikTok vocabulary, petroleum jelly already had a permanent place in beauty cabinets across generations. And naturally, that conversation has brought renewed attention back to Vaseline — arguably the product most synonymous with the trend itself. But what’s interesting is how the brand has evolved beyond its iconic Original Healing Jelly. Today’s consumer still wants nourishment and protection, but in textures and formats that feel lighter, more sensorial, and better aligned with modern skincare routines. That shift is visible in newer launches like the Vaseline GLUTA-HYA collection, which leans into hydration and glow with a more sensorial finish, alongside products like the Vaseline Radiant X Deep Nourishment Body Cream, developed with barrier-focused ingredients designed to support dry, stressed skin without the heaviness traditionally associated with occlusives. Even the idea of slugging itself has evolved. For many consumers today, it’s less about coating the skin in a thick layer of petroleum jelly and more about strategic moisture sealing — layering hydrating serums, ceramides, and richer creams to reinforce the skin barrier overnight. In many ways, the trend reflects a broader shift happening across beauty right now: consumers are becoming less interested in aggressive skincare routines and more invested in products that help skin feel resilient, balanced, and healthy long-term. So… Is Slugging Worth Trying? If your skin feels irritated, dehydrated, overworked, or stripped from too many treatments, slugging can genuinely make a visible difference overnight. Skin often looks calmer, smoother, and more rested by morning — particularly in dry climates or after long-haul travel. But the real appeal of slugging may be what it represents. In a beauty culture obsessed with instant transformation, slugging is surprisingly gentle. It’s not about resurfacing your face into oblivion. It’s about protecting it. Repairing it. Letting skin recover instead of constantly demanding more from it. And perhaps that’s why the trend has lasted longer than most internet beauty fads. Because beneath the TikTok gloss and viral terminology, slugging reflects something the beauty industry is slowly rediscovering: healthy skin is not always the result of doing more. Sometimes, it’s about knowing when to protect the barrier instead of constantly trying to perfect it You Might Also Like Beauty Experts Reveal the Treatments They’d Never Do—And the Habits They Avoid Completely Vaseline® appoints JENNIE as Global Ambassador for its Body Care Collection How Light Therapy Quietly Rewired My Skincare Routine
- Finding the Perfect Nude Lipstick for Your Skin Tone
The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Right Nude Lipstick for Every Skin Tone Finding the Perfect Nude Lipstick for Your Skin Tone The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Right Nude Lipstick for Every Skin Tone by Khadija Husain 17 Sep 2024 Over the years, lipstick has been a symbol of beauty, power, and self-expression. Among bold reds and playful pinks, a quiet revolution has emerged: the rise of the perfect nude lipstick. Once a backstage beauty secret, nude lipsticks have become a must-have in every makeup collection, offering a natural, polished look for any occasion. But finding the perfect nude for your skin tone can be tricky. In this article, we explore the rise of nude lipsticks, how to find your perfect shade, and iconic brands leading this beauty revolution. The Birth of the Nude Lipstick Trend Nude lipstick wasn’t always a beauty staple. Before the 2000s, most people gravitated towards the traditional reds, pinks, or browns. Then came makeup artists like Bobbi Brown, who in the '90s championed the idea of enhancing natural beauty rather than covering it up. Her line of neutral lipsticks opened up a new market for subtle, everyday beauty. Fast forward to today, and nude lipsticks have become synonymous with effortless elegance. What once seemed like a single shade now covers a spectrum of hues that complement different skin tones—from soft beige for fair skin to deep caramel for darker complexions. Finding Your Perfect Nude Lipstick Not all nudes are created equal. What works for one person may wash out another. Here’s a guide to finding the perfect nude lipstick based on your skin tone: Fair Skin Tones : For those with fair skin, a nude lipstick with a slight pink or peach undertone can help prevent the lips from looking too pale. Brands like Charlotte Tilbury offer a range of pinky nudes, with the Pillow Talk range being a cult favourite. Another great option is Bobbi Brown's “Sandwash Pink” , a soft, nude-pink that gives a naturally elegant finish. Medium Skin Tones : If you have a medium or olive skin tone, you’ll want to find a nude with peach or warm beige undertones. NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in “Bahama” i s an excellent choice, offering a soft brown hue that flatters olive and medium complexions. Meanwhile, Dior Rouge Dior Lipstick in “Nude Look” provides a warm, beige-pink that’s ideal for a chic, polished look. Tan Skin Tones : Nude lipsticks with caramel or warm brown undertones complement tan skin beautifully. T om Ford’s “Sable Smoke” is a luxurious warm-toned nude that harmonizes well with tan skin. Additionally, YSL Rouge Pur Couture in “Beige Tribute” offers an elegant blend of beige and peach, creating a sophisticated and subtle look. Deep Skin Tones : To flatter deeper skin tones, consider shades like chocolatey browns, rich caramels, mocha browns, deep caramels, or nudes with a subtle plum undertone. The MAC Satin Lipstick in "Mocha" strikes a harmonious balance of warmth and depth, enhancing tan skin without overpowering it, making it a popular choice. For a more creamy and luxurious alternative, Laura Mercier's Rouge Essentiel Silky Crème Lipstick in "Brun Naturel" offers a deep, warm nude that complements dark skin tones beautifully, providing sophistication and versatility for any occasion. The Perfect Nude Look: How to Wear It A nude lip doesn’t have to mean a bare look. The versatility of nude lipstick allows you to play up your eyes, cheeks, or outfit without competing with bold lip color. For a fresh and dewy look, pair your nude lipstick with soft blush and glowing skin. If you’re going for something more glamorous, a smoky eye and nude lip is the ultimate combination, drawing attention to the eyes while maintaining balance. Why Nude Lipsticks Are Here to Stay The nude lipstick trend speaks to our collective shift towards more natural beauty. As consumers seek products that enhance their features rather than transform them, nude lipsticks are seen as a timeless option that offers versatility, elegance, and ease. Plus, their adaptability makes them ideal for transitioning from day to night looks or from casual to formal settings. With brands embracing diversity and consumers demanding products that cater to all skin tones, the nude lipstick revolution is far from over. - Healing from Insecure Attachments: A Journey to Emotional Well-Being
Secure at Last: Healing Insecure Attachments and Reclaiming Emotional Well-Being Healing from Insecure Attachments: A Journey to Emotional Well-Being Secure at Last: Healing Insecure Attachments and Reclaiming Emotional Well-Being by Khadija Husain 1 Nov 2024 From a baby's first cry, met by a mother’s comforting touch, the fundamental human need for connection is revealed. These early interactions set the foundation for emotional bonds that influence our relationships throughout life. Cynthia Ghosn, a DHA-Licensed Psychology Technician and Early Career Professional at Thrive Wellbeing Centre, delves into the nature of insecure attachments, exploring their roots and how they shape our adult connections. According to Cynthia, the attachments formed in childhood significantly influence how we connect with others as adults. When caregivers consistently meet emotional needs, secure attachments are likely to develop. However, when these needs are unmet or met inconsistently, insecure attachment patterns emerge. These can manifest in three distinct styles: Anxious Attachment : Often a result of inconsistent caregiving, anxious attachment leads to a fear of abandonment and a need for constant reassurance. Adults with this attachment style may grapple with low self-esteem, find it hard to communicate their needs, and often become overly dependent on their partners for validation. This dynamic can challenge the maintenance of healthy boundaries and emotional regulation in relationships. Avoidant Attachment : Stemming from emotionally distant caregiving, avoidant attachment results in a reluctance to form close emotional bonds. Those with this style tend to suppress emotions, avoid conflict, and prize independence as a form of self-protection. As a result, forming deep, meaningful connections can be difficult, as emotional vulnerability is perceived as a threat. Disorganised Attachment : Originating from environments where caregivers are sources of both comfort and fear, disorganised attachment leads to confusion in relationships. Adults with this style may alternate between seeking closeness and withdrawing out of fear, resulting in unpredictable behavior. Trust and security often feel elusive, complicating both personal and professional connections. Cynthia references a recent study conducted by Madigan (2023), which found that while 51.6% of individuals exhibit secure attachment styles, 48.4% experience insecure attachments. Of the latter group, 10.2% fall into the anxious category, 14.7% are avoidant, and 23.4% display disorganised attachment patterns. These figures underscore the prevalence of attachment-related struggles and highlight the importance of addressing these issues to improve emotional health and relationship quality. Cynthia Ghosn "Awareness is the first step," Cynthia explains. Therapy offers a transformative path for individuals seeking to break the cycles of insecure attachment. One effective approach is Emotion-Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT), which helps clients understand their attachment history and foster healthier emotional connections. This method focuses on recognizing childhood attachment dynamics, processing those emotions, and actively working towards improved emotional regulation. In addition, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps address negative thought patterns, while Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) encourages mindfulness and self-compassion. Together, these therapeutic approaches equip individuals to manage emotional responses, rebuild trust, and develop more secure, fulfilling relationships. As Cynthia notes, "Healing from insecure attachments allows individuals to develop a deeper sense of self-awareness and emotional well-being." By recognizing and reshaping their attachment patterns, people can create more meaningful personal connections, leading to greater emotional stability and a healthier, more balanced life. As we navigate the complexities of modern living, it’s essential to remember the wisdom of Dr. Sue Johnson: "To be human is to need others, and this is no flaw or weakness." A Retreat for the Mind, Body, and Senses: Akari Launches in One Central Akari opens at One Central, a new Dubai wellness destination pairing science-led therapies with design built to soothe the senses. by Sara Al Farsi 13 Oct 2025 Dubai just got a new wellness destination, and it’s not your usual spa. Akari, now open at One Central, promises a sanctuary where science-led therapies meet design that soothes the senses. Think of it as wellness elevated: precise, restorative, and thoughtfully curated to support both mind and body. Founded by Katia de Rham, a champion of holistic wellbeing, Akari was conceived as more than a retreat. Katia’s vision? A space where measurable results meet calm, where therapies are rooted in science but delivered in an atmosphere that feels entirely restorative. The offerings read like a wellness wishlist brought to life: red light therapy for skin and cellular health, intermittent hypoxia-hyperoxia treatments to boost endurance and focus, NormaTec compression therapy to enhance circulation and recovery, and bespoke nutrition rituals tailored to your body’s needs. And then there’s the Brain Bar, serving collagen infusions, adaptogenic blends, and fermented wellness shots to nourish from within. But Akari isn’t just about what you do, it’s about where you are. Designed by Valentina Cereda of Energy & Space, the interiors embody regenerative principles from classical feng shui to biophilic design. Every angle, pathway, and material. From limewash to organic textiles is chosen to foster harmony and well-being, making the architecture itself a subtle act of healing. Sustainability is woven into Akari’s DNA: the space is plastic-free, toxin-free, and committed to responsible practices across treatments, nutrition, and design. It’s luxury without compromise, conscious by design. Looking ahead, Akari plans to host intimate talks, workshops, and community gatherings exploring longevity, integrative health, and mindful living—extending its mission beyond treatments to conversations that matter. “Akari was born from our shared vision to create a place where science, sustainability, and serenity come together,” says Katia. “We wanted to offer a new standard of wellness for Dubai, one that is effective, evidence-based, and deeply restorative.” For those ready to explore wellness beyond the ordinary, Akari in One Central is now open, welcoming guests into a space that balances precision, serenity, and conscious living. RAVE's edit of the perfumes worth discovering beyond the algorithm's bestsellers. by Rave Staff 30 Jul 2025 Fragrance speaks before you do, and sometimes lingers longer than you stay. But in a world of algorithm-driven bestsellers, there’s a growing shift toward scents that feel intentional. This season, we’re drawn to perfumes that carry weight: in story, in texture, in how they move on skin. Forget the flashy launches. These nine picks, ranging from salt-laced extracts to artisanal attars and modern balms, are deeply personal, quietly powerful, and anything but ordinary. Made to evolve with time and chemistry, each one is designed for those who treat scent not as a final touch, but as part of their identity. 1. Khaltat – Grá Emotion-driven. Quietly powerful. Grá doesn’t chase trends—it follows feeling. Rooted in Khaltat’s philosophy of love and legacy, this UAE-crafted perfume oil skips alcohol and leans into clarity. It opens with mint cool, sharp, and clean—before melting into warm amber and settling into a base of gentle oud. What remains is soft but steady, like a memory that never quite fades. Price: AED 550 Shop: Buy here 2. Hind Al Oud – Unstoppable Zesty. Creamy. Built for movement. Unstoppable captures the rhythm of summer without defaulting to cliché. A sharp opening of lime zest and green mandarin is lifted by spearmint fresh, bright, almost electric. But the edges soften as cardamom and fig leaf roll in, grounding the scent in warmth. Anchored by driftwood and musk, this is a fragrance that keeps pace with you, steady, clean, and quietly confident. Price: AED 770 Shop: Buy here 3. IDMAN – Perfume Balm Portable. Subtle. Unexpectedly radiant. Founded by Joelle Sakkal, IDMAN merges Arabic fragrance traditions with French sensibility. This balm, designed for pulse points, hair ends, or beard, is a tactile rethinking of perfume. Pink pepper gives a soft spark, balanced by solar notes that feel warm, expansive, and just a touch nostalgic. It’s light, non-oily, and perfectly sized to go wherever you do. Price: AED 135 Shop: Buy here 4. Roja Parfums – Oceania Polished. Marine. Impeccably British. Oceania by Roja Parfums is a masterclass in balance. It opens with bright citrus and green herbs before moving into airy sea notes and resting on sandalwood, vetiver, and musk. Fresh but not fleeting, classic without feeling dated, it’s the olfactory equivalent of a tailored white shirt on sun-warmed skin. Price: AED 1,620 Shop: Buy here 5. DS & Durga – Jazmín Yucatan Untamed. Lush. Not here to be polite. Jazmín Yucatan is not your soft, sweet jasmine. Inspired by the steamy, post-rain energy of the Yucatán Peninsula, this scent leans into the wilder, more animalic side of the flower. Earthy, green, and slightly powdery, it feels like walking through a jungle garden that’s alive with scent. It’s bold, raw, and addictive in the most unapologetic way. Price: AED 1,281 Shop: Buy here 6. House of Noya – Ocean’s Luminescence Creamy. Salty. Rooted in heritage. Inspired by Dubai’s pearl-diving legacy, Ocean’s Luminescence from House of Noya feels like a memory of the sea. Produced in Italy as part of the Acqua Collezione, this extrait blends salt-touched marine notes with creamy woods and a warm, sunlit finish. The bottle with its globe-like topper feels like holding a small piece of the coastline in your palm. Price: AED 750 Shop: Buy here 7. Floris London – Golden Amber Sun-warmed. Balanced. Quietly romantic. Inspired by the golden hour over Lake Garda, this blend brings together Mediterranean brightness and English softness. Fig, cassis, and bergamot open the scent with lightness, while rose and neroli add an elegant floral layer. The dry-down of tonka, sandalwood, and almond blossom leaves a silky, luminous trail. Price: AED 1,084 Shop: Buy here 8. Shama Perfumes – Reem (Attar) Traditional. Intimate. Made to stay close. Reem by Shama Perfumes is a study in restraint. Crafted using Indian artisanal techniques, this alcohol-free attar is soft yet persistent, meant to sit close to the skin, not shout across a room. With an emphasis on natural ingredients and lasting wear, it’s ideal for those who want a perfume experience that feels personal and grounded in heritage. Price: AED 125 Shop: Buy here 9. Shama Perfumes – Sougha Elegant. Floral. The softer twin. Sougha is the floral counterpart to Reem. Also oil-based and handcrafted, it leans into a more delicate profile with oud and rose at its heart. It’s classic but not stiff, elevated but never loud. Together, Reem and Sougha form a quiet dialogue between intensity and lightness, each reflecting a different mood of the same refined philosophy.
