  • The Modern Host’s Guide to Table Styling

By Chrissie Rucker OBE, Founder of The White Company The Modern Host’s Guide to Table Styling By Chrissie Rucker OBE, Founder of The White Company by Khadija Husain 1 May 2025 There’s something undeniably special about a thoughtfully styled dining table—it sets the tone, sparks conversation, and lingers in memory long after the last bite. Whether it’s a weekday dinner or a festive gathering, the modern host understands that how we present our tables is a reflection of the care and character we bring to any occasion. To decode the art of table styling with timeless elegance and a minimalist touch, we turned to Chrissie Rucker OBE, Founder of The White Company, whose signature aesthetic has elevated modern homes around the world. Design with Intention “The key is to match the mood and purpose of the occasion,” Chrissie says. For formal gatherings, it’s all about polished details—beaded placemats, tall candlesticks, sparkling glassware, and layers of soft linens that instantly add sophistication. In contrast, casual meals call for a more relaxed touch: think uncovered wooden tables, fresh herbs as centerpieces, and the soft flicker of tealight candles. “A well-set table should feel inviting, practical, and thoughtfully designed,” she adds. “It’s about creating an experience that feels as good as it looks Minimalism with Meaning While minimalism often risks feeling bare, Chrissie infuses it with warmth and soul. “Minimalism is about thoughtful choices,” she explains. “I stick to a single color palette—often white with soft greenery—and add texture through materials like linen napkins and ribbed glassware.” The result? Understated elegance that feels considered rather than sparse. Details like a rosemary sprig tucked into a napkin bring subtle charm that delights without overwhelming. The Essentials of Elegance Chrissie’s toolkit for a versatile and elevated table is refreshingly simple. “White linen tablecloths and napkins are timeless. Classic white china lets the food take center stage, while ribbed or clear glassware reflects light beautifully.” Her favorite accessories? A mix of clear glass and mercury candle holders for a hint of sparkle. “Everything should work together to create an elegant, welcoming space.” Plates, Cutlery & Glassware “Plates set the foundation for the dining experience,” says Chrissie. Organic shapes suggest ease and informality, while structured or square styles bring modern flair. Textured finishes, especially in matte tones, lend warmth to casual settings. When it comes to glassware, Chrissie recommends delicate stemmed glasses for formal events and versatile stemless options for relaxed affairs. “Ribbed or etched glassware catches the light beautifully. Tall tumblers for mocktails or juices bring freshness and height to the table.” “Cutlery is often overlooked, but it makes a huge difference,” Chrissie shares. “Weighty, balanced pieces add a sense of occasion. For formal settings, polished silver or gold-tone finishes elevate the experience, while brushed or matte cutlery suits a more contemporary, casual vibe.” She also recommends investing in a few versatile accents that can work across seasons and occasions: beaded placemats for texture, mirrored runners for added light, and a mix of clear and mercury glass candle holders for sparkle. Designing for Practicality and Beauty A well-styled table should never compromise on functionality. “Keep your centerpieces low—small floral arrangements, scattered greenery, or even bowls of seasonal fruit work beautifully without obstructing views or taking up too much space,” Chrissie advises. “You want your guests to connect easily across the table.” Candles are essential, but choose varying heights to create visual dimension without clutter. “Balance is everything,” she notes. “It’s about layering thoughtfully, without overwhelming the space.” Seasonal Sensibility When it comes to colour, white is Chrissie’s go-to for its calming versatility. But she adds seasonal nuances with ease. “In winter, I love introducing metallic accents and lush greenery for a sense of warmth. In spring or summer, soft pastels and natural textures like seagrass or raffia bring a lighter, breezier energy.” Patterns, if used, are kept subtle—never stealing the spotlight from the food or ambiance. Creating Cohesion So how does one achieve a cohesive look that still feels dynamic? According to Chrissie, it’s all about contrast and harmony. “Stick to a cohesive colour palette, but mix up your textures—pair smooth porcelain with ribbed glass, or combine metallic accents with linen napkins. Let one or two elements stand out while everything else complements the story.” Lighting is another tool not to be underestimated. “A mix of tall and low candles adds atmosphere and movement. For outdoor or festive settings, fairy lights are perfect—they add charm and a soft glow that’s hard to beat.” The Magic of Lighting Lighting, Chrissie believes, is transformative. “A mix of tall and low candles creates a magical, layered glow.” For alfresco or festive settings, she adores fairy lights. “Candlelight not only enhances the beauty of the table, but also makes everyone feel relaxed and welcome.” Start Small, Style Big For those just beginning their table styling journey, Chrissie offers the perfect starting point. “Begin with a simple white linen runner, a few well-placed candles, and a touch of greenery or florals. Even something as small as a sprig of rosemary on each napkin can create an elevated, personal feel.” The takeaway? You don’t need an abundance of elements to create impact—just intention, care, and a few timeless pieces that speak to your style.

  • Rave Dines: Alba, Downtown Dubai

Rave Dines: Alba, Downtown Dubai by Khadija Husain 13 Jun 2025 In the heart of Downtown Dubai—just steps from the Opera House—Alba opens like the first note of a well-conducted symphony . Brought to life by the Metafoodies Group, this two-storey restaurant doesn’t just serve dinner; it stages an experience. The interiors are an immediate immersion. Sculptural figures—part myth, part modern art—nod to tradition, while floor-to-ceiling windows and a spiralling staircase echo the drama of its surroundings. Overhead, illuminated umbrellas drift like paper lanterns—a quiet tribute to Asian symbolism, speaking of prosperity and calm. But Alba’s story isn’t told through design alone. Under the eye of Chef Vladimir Chistyakov, the kitchen crafts a menu rooted in precision and range, blending Japanese clarity, Korean heat, and Mediterranean freshness. We began with Edamame dusted in Nori Salt—minimal, but quietly assertive. The Wagyu Nigiri arrived next: a delicate sear, soft marbling, and a whisper of citrus that cut through the richness without overpowering it. The Wagyu Kushi followed—skewered, flame-kissed, and glazed with a balance of umami and caramel. Wagyu Kushi Then came a wildcard: KFC with spicy sauce. The name teased, but the flavour held its ground—fiery, crisp, and sticky in all the right ways. The centrepiece of the evening was the Wagyu Ribeye with Ancho Chilli. Cooked to a velvet pink and carved tableside, it delivered depth without weight. The chilli didn’t shout—it lingered, slowly building warmth and drawing out every layer of richness. If meat has a moment of theatre, this was it. KFC with spicy sauce To close, the Sakura dessert: floral, fleeting, and as light as a spring breeze. Cherry blossom and lavender notes, fruit layered with restraint, and textures that disappeared on the tongue. A graceful, deliberate finale. What sets Alba apart isn’t just its aesthetic or flavours—it’s the tone. Unapologetically bold, but deeply considered. Service mirrors that energy. Twinkle guided our evening with quiet confidence. Nothing felt rehearsed; everything felt personal. The beverage program is just as assured. The Jasmine Yuzu sparkled with clarity. The Asian Colada leaned tropical without turning cloying. A Spring Harvest Sencha offered a mid-meal pause, calming and precise. Beverage selections are global, but thoughtfully edited. No noise, just intention. Sakura Alba isn’t chasing the noise of Instagram-first dining. It doesn’t rely on theatrics for virality, nor does it shout to be noticed. The drama here is measured, intentional. In a district dominated by glossy spectacle, Alba offers something more restrained, more assured. It’s a study in contrasts: tradition and edge, minimalism and drama, silk and steel. Whether you're slipping in before a show or settling in for an unhurried evening, Alba doesn’t try to be everything. What it chooses to be, it delivers with quiet precision. Location: Dubai Opera Plaza, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Blvd, Downtown Dubai Hours: Monday – Friday: 4 PM to 1 AM; Saturday – Sunday: 12 PM to 1 AM Contact: +971 58 147 9888 Website: alba.metafoodiesgroup.com Instagram: @albarestdubai Images supplied

  • 6 Dubai Restaurants, 6 Different Moods

6 Dubai Restaurants, 6 Different Moods by Rave Staff 28 Jul 2025 Not every meal is about the food. Sometimes it’s the lighting, the crowd, the silence, or the noise. Sometimes it’s the first coffee of the day in a sunlit space. Other times, it’s a quiet rooftop dinner where you just want to be left alone for a while. Because let’s be honest, how we eat isn’t always about what’s on the plate. It’s about how we’re feeling that day. You might want a place where no one expects small talk. Or maybe you need somewhere that lets you dress up and feel like you’re part of something. Sometimes you want comfort. Other times, you want to feel like you’re in a different city altogether. Dubai’s dining scene has grown past the “new opening” rush. It’s not just about who’s posting from where. It’s about matching your pace. The version of you that steps out the door, tired, excited, burnt out, in need of company, or craving solitude. This list isn’t about food trends or popular picks. It’s about mood. About places that fit how you feel. So the next time you’re choosing where to go, skip the top 10 lists. Start with your mood. Normal Day Mood: Slow mornings, clean aesthetics, no pressure Tucked into Dubai’s quieter corners, Normal Day isn’t trying to be loud. It’s minimal, sun-washed, and designed to ease you into your day. The menu is simple, think eggs, toast, and coffee that doesn’t need syrup. It’s the kind of place you go alone with a book, or with a friend who won’t talk too much. Neutral interiors, soft wood, no forced energy. Just a place to breathe. Bisou Mood: French elegance, velvet seats, and date-night subtlety Bisou doesn’t scream “romantic”, it whispers it. Low lighting, plush textures, and a menu that leans French without being fussy. It’s a solid pick for when you want to dress up without trying too hard. The kind of place where conversations linger, and dessert is never optional. Perfect for an unhurried dinner with the right person, or even better, a solo evening with your phone on airplane mode. Jardin Des Arts Mood: Afternoon charm, garden escapes, refined taste Jardin Des Arts feels like a reset. Everything is styled, from the foliage to the flatware, but nothing feels artificial. It’s polished, yes, but not overdone. Ideal for long lunches, soft conversations, and maybe a meeting that doesn’t feel like one. There’s a stillness here that makes you slow down. It’s not the place you go to be seen. It’s the place you go to feel present. Reform Social & Grill Mood: Comfort-first, no judgment, just good food Some days, you just want something familiar. Reform doesn’t care about your outfit, and you won’t care about theirs. It’s British pub energy without the grime, family-friendly, open-air, and ideal for late breakfasts that become early lunches. You’ll find dogs, kids, football on screens, and a crowd that didn’t come to be curated. It’s honest, hearty, and refreshingly unbothered. Folly Brasserie Mood: Quiet corners, glass ceilings, and the feeling of elsewhere Folly Brasserie is calm by design. Set in a glasshouse with high ceilings and soft lighting, it feels removed from the rest of the city. There’s the sound of water, open space, and enough privacy to settle in. It’s the kind of place where you don’t need to talk much, and no one’s in a hurry. Come here when you want dinner to feel like a break, not a scene. Gerbou Mood: Rooted, thoughtful, and quietly revolutionary Gerbou is for when you want meaning with your meal. Tucked inside Alserkal Avenue, this Emirati fine dining spot doesn’t rely on flash it leans into intention. The ingredients are local, the storytelling is layered, and the space is as restrained as it is elegant. It’s where you go when you want to think, reflect, or just be around something that feels considered . Food as identity, space as message.

  • Rave Dines: Discovering the Culinary Delights at Bar des Prés, DIFC

French Finesse Meets Japanese Soul Rave Dines: Discovering the Culinary Delights at Bar des Prés, DIFC French Finesse Meets Japanese Soul by Khadija Husain 25 Jan 2025 It’s not every day that you walk into a restaurant perched on the 51st floor, only to feel instantly transported to a world where Parisian elegance flirts with East Asian vibrance. But that’s exactly what happens at Bar des Prés by Cyril Lignac. This isn’t just dining; it’s an experience—a feast for both the eyes and the palate, all while the city of Dubai sprawls beneath you. The first thing you notice when you enter is the impressive high ceilings that give the space an expansive, airy feel. The entire restaurant feels both grand and intimate at the same time, thanks to its thoughtful design. The deep blues, copper accents, and textured bamboo and rattan details create a unique blend of Parisian chic and East Asian minimalism. Designed by the talented Lázaro Rosa-Violán, the interiors strike a balance between elegance and warmth. The ambiance invites you to relax, but there’s also an unmistakable sense of sophistication that underscores everything. The Sushi Counter, seating just 10 guests, offers a rare chance to witness culinary artistry up close. Even though I wasn’t seated there, the views from my table—paired with the restaurant's vibrant energy and the Dubai skyline—more than made up for it. The menu, like the space, is bold but balanced—French technique infused with Japanese flair. We began with the Miso caramelised green asparagus, a dish that transforms a humble vegetable into something extraordinary. The miso brought deep umami, the hazelnuts added crunch, and the sesame vinaigrette offered a nutty, tangy finish. Next came the Breaded ‘volaille des Landes’ chicken, crisp on the outside with an irresistibly juicy center, paired with a zesty sriracha mayonnaise that provided just the right amount of heat. Indulgent yet refined, this dish could easily become a guilty pleasure. But the star of the evening? The Charred A4 Japanese Wagyu entrecote, a true showstopper. Cooked to perfection, the meat was buttery and rich, with just the right amount of char that gave it depth without overpowering the natural flavour. The barbecue sauce added a smoky sweetness that paired beautifully with the marbling of the wagyu. If you're going to indulge, this is where you do it. The Grilled Australian beef fillet was lighter in comparison, but the smoked Kerala pepper brought its distinct heat and complexity to the dish. And while I’m normally not one to rave about side dishes, the Vanilla mashed potatoes deserve their mention. Who knew vanilla and potatoes could get along so well? It was unexpected but worked—creamy, comforting, with a touch of sweetness that just made sense. Dessert is where Cyril Lignac’s background as a pastry chef shines. The Guanaja chocolate biscuit—decadent, gooey, with a molten hazelnut centre—was like a warm hug for chocolate lovers. Paired with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, it was the kind of dessert that made you want to scrape the plate clean. But the Raspberry pavlova was the refreshing counterpart. Light, airy, with the perfect mix of tart raspberries, sweet mango, and the zing of passion fruit. It felt like the meal had come full circle, from indulgence to lightness, leaving you satisfied but not overwhelmed. Final Thoughts Bar des Prés isn’t just about food—it’s about the entire experience. The high ceilings, the intricate design, the sweeping views of Dubai, and the DJ’s curated beats all work together to make it feel like you’re in a world of your own. The impeccable service and attention to detail add to the sense of sophistication that lingers long after your meal ends. If I had to describe the experience in one word? Effortless. Everything flowed smoothly, yet behind it all, there’s a team of experts ensuring every detail is just right. Whether you’re here for a business lunch, a romantic dinner, or simply to unwind with friends, Bar des Prés effortlessly adapts to your mood, elevating it. For a dining experience that leaves a lasting impression, this is a place worth returning to, again and again.
