  • Movie review: The Black Phone 2

The chills are real Movie review: The Black Phone 2 The chills are real by Khadija Husain 16 Oct 2025 Walking into The Black Phone 2 , I wasn’t sure if a sequel could ever match the unnerving thrill of the original. But from the very first scene, it became clear, this is horror done smart, stylish, and deeply personal. Scott Derrickson returns to the director’s chair, collaborating again with Blumhouse, to deliver a story that’s as much about fear as it is about family, trauma, and courage. Four years have passed since Finn (Mason Thames) survived the Grabber, yet the shadows of his past are far from gone. Now 17, Finn struggles with life after captivity, carrying scars that are as emotional as they are physical. Enter his younger sister Gwen (Madeleine McGraw), a headstrong 15-year-old whose dreams and visions begin to echo the horrors her brother endured. When the black phone calls again, it sets them on a chilling journey to Alpine Lake Youth Camp, a snowbound, remote setting that instantly amplifies the tension. The performances anchor the film. Thames portrays Finn with quiet vulnerability, conveying the weight of survival without tipping into melodrama. McGraw is magnetic as Gwen, balancing bravery and curiosity in a way that makes her instantly relatable. And then there’s Ethan Hawke, returning as the Grabber in what may be his most chilling performance yet. Every moment he appears is a study in menace, a reminder that some evils don’t rest in death. Supporting cast members Demián Bichir, Arianna Rivas, and Jeremy Davies add depth, making the camp feel like a lived-in, tense environment rather than just a backdrop for scares. The narrative is clever, weaving suspense, supernatural elements, and emotional stakes seamlessly. Dream sequences blur the line between reality and nightmare, keeping viewers off-balance in all the right ways. While some moments feel rushed, Derrickson and co-writer C. Robert Cargill maintain a sharp focus on the characters’ emotional arcs, which is what ultimately makes the horror resonate beyond cheap jump scares. Visually, the film is stunning. The snow-drenched camp, shadowy interiors, and unsettlingly quiet moments create a mood that lingers long after the screen goes dark. Cinematography and sound design work together to pull the audience into a world that’s at once familiar and terrifyingly unpredictable. What makes The Black Phone 2 especially compelling is how it balances horror with heart. It’s a story about survival, courage, and the unbreakable bond between siblings, wrapped in a mythos that feels rich and original. It’s a film that makes you jump, gasp, and sometimes flinch. But, also one that makes you think about fear, family, and resilience long after leaving the cinema. For anyone craving a spine-tingling horror experience this season, The Black Phone 2 delivers in spades. I caught it at VOX Cinema, and the immersive big-screen experience, combined with the stormy winter setting of the story, made the tension almost tangible. Screening across all VOX and Majid Al Futtaim outlets, it’s the perfect winter watch for horror enthusiasts or anyone brave enough to answer the call.

  • These Horror Films Will Stay With You Long After the Credits

These Horror Films Will Stay With You Long After the Credits by Rave Staff 10 Jun 2025 Horror is the one genre that doesn’t play fair. It knows exactly how to hit where it hurts — sometimes physically, sometimes psychologically. The best horror films don’t just frighten; they leave bruises. They stick with you long after the credits roll, echoing in your head while you brush your teeth or walk alone to your car at night. If you’ve ever paused a film “just to check your phone,” let’s be real — it was fear. But here’s the thing: a lot of horror is loud, lazy, and forgettable. Loud noise ≠ fear. Gore ≠ good horror. This list isn’t for people who flinch at every creaking door. It’s for the ones who chase the slow burn, the existential dread, the films that disturb you not because of what they show — but because of what they don’t. So here’s your updated, refined, no-fluff horror watchlist — a mix of modern psychological terrors, disturbing classics, and a few under-the-radar gems. All killer, no filler. Hereditary (2018) If you’ve somehow skipped this one, fix that. Ari Aster’s debut film is brutal in a way most horror movies never dare to be. It’s a story about grief, family, and the kind of evil that doesn’t show up in shadows — it’s already in the house. Toni Collette’s performance will rattle you. This isn’t horror you can turn off when it’s over. The Witch (2015) Set in 1630s New England, this slow-burn nightmare plays out like a folk tale told by someone who definitely didn’t make it out alive. No jump scares, no cheap thrills — just tension, isolation, and a sense that something is deeply wrong. If you’re patient, the payoff is chilling. It Follows (2014) One of the most original horror concepts in years. A supernatural curse that passes through sex and takes the form of a silent figure walking toward you — always walking. It’s paranoia on film. There’s no escape, no explanation, just a slow march toward inevitable dread. The Babadook (2014) Yes, it’s about a creepy childr en’s book. But this one goes deeper — into the kind of pain and mental collapse that can’t be exorcised. The monster is terrifying, sure. But what really stays with you is the raw, unfiltered fear of losing control — of your mind, your kid, your life. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) Still unmatched in how filthy, violent, and chaotic it feels. It’s less a film and more a full-body experience. The noise, the grainy footage, the sense that you’re watching something you shouldn’t — it all adds up. Leatherface isn’t just a villain — he’s a symbol of the breakdown of everything safe and familiar. Midsommar (2019) A breakup movie disguised as a horror film set in a sun-soaked cult. It’s bright, it’s floral, and it’s one of the most disturbing films in modern horror. The violence is ritualistic and slow, but it lands hard. It’s not just disturbing — it’s disorienting. Saint Maud (2019) This one doesn’t scream. It whispers. And that’s what makes it terrifying. A young nurse’s religious devotion spirals into something unholy. You watch her unravel in real-time, and by the time the final scene hits, it’s already too late. Quiet horror with a brutal edge. Sinister (2012) Found footage meets possession in this underrated gem. Ethan Hawke stumbles on Super 8 films of family murders, and things go downhill fast. The home videos are genuinely horrifying, but it’s the entity behind them — Bughuul — that lingers in your head long after. The Strangers chapter 1 & 2 Three people knock on the door. No motive. No warning. Just violence. This one hits because it feels real. You can’t rationalize it. You can’t explain it. And that one line — “Because you were home” — says everything about the kind of fear that doesn’t need a backstory. Audition (1999) Takashi Miike lures you in with a calm, even sweet, setup. Then he pulls the rug — hard. What begins as a quiet romance turns into one of the most violent, emotionally jarring final acts in horror history. It’s not easy to watch. But it’s unforgettable. This isn’t the list of Halloween popcorn flicks. These are the films that make you keep the lights on. Horror at its best doesn’t just shock — it reveals. It says something honest about fear, grief, loneliness, violence. Watch with caution. And maybe don’t watch alone. Featured image courtesy of Jakob Owens

  • Rave Dines: Savor the Flavors of Il Gattopardo, DIFC’s Hidden Gem

A Taste of La Dolce Vita in the Heart of Dubai Rave Dines: Savor the Flavors of Il Gattopardo, DIFC’s Hidden Gem A Taste of La Dolce Vita in the Heart of Dubai by Khadija Husain 10 Jan 2025 Flashy restaurant interiors are not hard to come by in Dubai, but an indulgent meal in a jazzy, sophisticated setting is a rare luxury. So, how does newcomer Il Gattopardo in Dubai measure up? Inspired by the spirit of 1960s Italy and named after the iconic novel Il Gattopardo, this restaurant in DIFC pays homage to that golden era while joining the family of other prestigious international names such as Coya, Zuma, and Amazónico. Il Gattopardo brings the elegance of Italian dining from London’s Mayfair to ICD Brookfield Place in DIFC, Dubai. Perched on the 51st floor, the restaurant offers breathtaking views of Dubai’s skyline, including the majestic Burj Khalifa. From the moment you step inside, Il Gattopardo transports you to the heart of Italy, enveloping you in an ambience that seamlessly blends glamour, sophistication, and warmth, embodying the refined luxury of the Italian Riviera. As we entered, we were greeted by a striking leopard sculpture—a nod to the restaurant's literary namesake. Designed by the acclaimed Lázaro Rosa-Violán, the interiors combine the cosmopolitan energy of Milan with the romance of Venice. With a warm colour palette, bold splashes of cobalt blue, glossy wood, chrome accents, and elegant leopard motifs enhance the space, while Italian-inspired art and artisan murals celebrate Italy’s rich cultural history. Whether for lunch or dinner, the ambience remains intimate and inviting, with lowered dining areas ensuring every guest enjoys a stunning view of the Dubai skyline. However, the true showstopper is the menu, curated by Executive Chef Massimo Pasquarelli, a native of Italy’s Abruzzo region. Designed to be shared, the à la carte offerings celebrate modern Italian cuisine with a focus on Sicily, Amalfi, and the Southern Isles. The attentive staff waited to enhance the experience, making the dining journey even more enjoyable. We were treated to a parade of dishes, each a modern interpretation of Italian classics crafted from seasonal ingredients and local produce. Our meal began with the refreshing Pere e Noci salad, a delightful combination of sweet pears, toasted walnuts, and baby spinach, elevated by the bold flavour of Gorgonzola. This light, refreshing dish set the perfect tone for what was to come. For the Antipasti, the Carpaccio Manzo stood out. Thin slices of black Angus carpaccio were elegantly paired with truffle shavings, Parmesan, and pink peppercorns, creating a perfect balance of textures and flavors. As a nod to Italian tradition, we also shared a Margherita Pizza—a bite of tradition with its simple yet sublime mozzarella fior di latte, Datterino tomato sauce, and basil oil. The pizza was a comforting bite of tradition, where each ingredient shone through—a true Italian staple. Moving on to the Primi Piatti , the Roasted Pumpkin Ravioli left us in awe. These pillowy ravioli, filled with sweet pumpkin and smothered in a luscious Parmesan cream, were further enriched by the texture and nuttiness of toasted pumpkin seeds adding depth to the dish. For the Secondi , we had the Milanese Veal Tomahawk . This generously sized veal cutlet, Tender and cooked to perfection, was accompanied by caper & lemon brown butter and anchovy cream, offering a balance of richness and brightness. To finish the meal, we were served the cheese selection, Tagliere , showcased the best of Italy’s artisanal cheeses—a must-try for any cheese lover. The combination of robust, creamy, and tangy flavours was a delightful way to end the savoury portion of our feast. But the triumph of the evening was the dessert menu, curated by Head Pastry Chef Galileo Reposo. We indulged in two decadent options: the classic Tiramisu, with its espresso-soaked ladyfingers and airy mascarpone cream, and the Vanilla Crema Cotta, paired with a scoop of pistachio ice cream. Both desserts were a perfect sweet ending to an unforgettable meal. Chef Reposo’s creations, particularly the Tiramisu, have garnered a viral following, and for good reason—it lingered in our minds for days afterwards. To accompany our meal, we enjoyed a refreshing Pina Colada —a tropical, fruity contrast that paired beautifully with the rich flavours of the evening. The dining area exudes quiet elegance with plush seating, warm lighting, and statement chandeliers that add character to the space. The open kitchen infuses energy into the main dining room. As the sun sets and Dubai's lights twinkle, the atmosphere becomes even more magical, making it an ideal setting for a romantic dinner or an intimate gathering with friends. For those seeking exclusivity, Il Gattopardo also offers private dining rooms—Sofia and Gina—named after Italian cinematic icons Sophia Loren and Gina Lollobrigida. These rooms provide a perfect setting for intimate gatherings, while the vibrant lounge, with its resident DJ spinning retro Italian hits and tracks from the La Dolce Vita era, transforms into a lively late-night destination. Final Thoughts In a city brimming with Italian flair, Il Gattopardo stands out as a luxurious yet welcoming dining destination. Offering an unparalleled experience that transports you to Italy while embracing the glamour of Dubai, it’s perfect for any occasion—whether it's a leisurely lunch, a late-night aperitivo, or a private celebration. Il Gattopardo is a place to see and be seen, capturing the essence of la dolce vita. The space, the service, and the food—all shine brightest when Italian simplicity is celebrated. To paraphrase the adage, a leopard never changes its spots—and neither does a great Italian recipe. The brand’s successful acquisition of multiple global safety certifications for its products positions it to effectively support the UAE’s initiatives in reducing road and vehicle incidents. After undergoing several safety tests to gain the certification, OMODA C5 achieved a total score of 88.64 points, with “perfect” ratings in 11 out of 18 tests, including the Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), Child Occupant Protection (COP), and Safety Assist (SA) tests. With this certification, OMODA C5 has set a strong standard for all models of its class, achieving the highest score overall. This achievement underscores OMODA & JAECOO’s unwavering commitment in turning its products into reliable lifestyle companions, facilitated by putting drivers’ safety first. With a rigorous emphasis on reliability and innovation, the brand has focused on ensuring high quality in its R&D processes, including materials, structure, configuration and more — all developed in alignment with global five-star safety criteria to prioritise user safety worldwide. Commenting on this latest accolade, Shawn Xu, CEO of OMODA & JAECOO Automobile International, said: “This accomplishment reflects the meticulous engineering and advanced safety technologies integrated into the OMODA C5, setting a new benchmark for protection in its class. In the UAE, where road safety is paramount especially during peak hours, the OMODA C5 will be establishing newer standards for driver safety, empowering our customers with the confidence to pursue their aspirations. At OMODA & JAECOO, we are committed to playing a part in bringing the UAE’s vision for safer roads to life, driven by a core philosophy of safety, innovation, and elevated quality, striving to meet the unique needs of the young and young at heart in the UAE while ensuring they are well protected on the road.” OMODA C5: Robust Safety Features and Innovative Design Most notable from the tests conducted for the ASEAN NCAP certification are the OMODA C5’s advanced Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and Safety Assist (SA) capabilities. Boasting a 78 per cent high-strength steel body composition, with a tensile strength of 1500 Mpa, the car was revealed to be highly effective at maintaining stability and overall cabin safety throughout impact tests of several strengths. Combined with a comprehensive technological system of 16 intelligent safety features, the car promises safe driving that is both intuitive and effortless on UAE roads. OMODA C5 was officially awarded the 5-star ASEAN NCAP rating during a media press conference held in Kuala Lumpur, where representatives from MIROS presented the certificate to OMODA & JAECOO.
