  • Valentine’s in Dubai: Three Ways to Celebrate

Valentine’s in Dubai: Three Ways to Celebrate by Layla Hassan 5 Feb 2026 In a city that has never been afraid of grand gestures, Valentine's Day 2026 arrives with a promise: that romance, in all its forms, deserves to be celebrated spectacularly. Whether you're planning an unforgettable evening for two, gathering your closest friends for a Galentine's soirée, or simply seeking something beautifully unconventional, Dubai's dining and leisure landscape has crafted experiences that transcend the predictable. Here, we present three distinct approaches to February 14th—each one designed with intention, elegance, and that unmistakable touch of Dubai magic. For the Grand Romantics Balloons at the Palace, Jumeirah Al Qasr Let's start with the most Instagram-worthy option on this list: dinner inside an actual balloon. Not a hot air balloon that's going anywhere—this one stays firmly planted within the palatial grounds of Jumeirah Al Qasr—but the visual impact is undeniable. The five-course menu unfolds while a live violinist plays in the background, and yes, there's a bouquet of roses included because some traditions simply work. It's theatrical in the best sense of the word, the kind of evening that feels designed for a proposal or a significant anniversary. Book early, because these balloons fill up faster than you'd think. Price: AED 3,000 per balloon for two guests 14 February | Two seatings: 6:30 pm–8:30 pm & 8:45 pm–11 pm Reserve: Call 800323232 or visit jumeirah.com Thiptara, Palace Downtown There's something deeply romantic about dining on water, and Thiptara's floating deck delivers exactly that. You're sitting directly on Burj Lake, with the city's skyline reflected in every direction, creating a cocooned feeling despite being in the heart of Downtown. The soft lighting, the gentle movement of water beneath your feet, the fact that this deck is reserved exclusively for couples on Valentine's—it all adds up to an evening where conversation flows easily, and the outside world feels remarkably far away. Price: AED 1,499 per couple Reserve: +971 4 428 7796 or email dineatpalacedowntown@palacehotels.com Love Under the Stars, DoubleTree by Hilton Marjan Island Private beach dinners sound deceptively simple until you're actually experiencing one. DoubleTree by Hilton's 650-metre stretch of pristine sand becomes the setting for a five-course meal where the only soundtrack is the sound of waves rolling in. There's something about being this close to the water—the salt air, the complete absence of city noise, the way the evening unfolds at its own unhurried pace—that makes even familiar conversations feel more intimate. It's uncomplicated in the best way, which is sometimes exactly what Valentine's Day needs. Price: AED 1,299 per couple Reserve: Call 07 203 0104 or WhatsApp +971 56 995 4579 Laguna Beach Lounge, Sofitel Dubai The Palm Sofitel knows how to set a scene. Their beachside lounge brings in roaming violinists for Valentine's weekend, which instantly elevates what's already a solid four-course menu into something more memorable. The setting walks the line between casual and elegant—you're on the beach, shoes optional, but the service is polished, and the presentation is thoughtful. What makes this work is the mood: relaxed enough that you're not overthinking your outfit, refined enough that it still feels like a proper celebration. Price: From AED 1,500 per couple Reserve: WhatsApp + 971 52 9250736 , or email dining.palmdubai@sofitel.com . Aloft Aloha Beach, Palm Jumeirah Sometimes the best approach is straightforward: a solid four-course menu, a bouquet, and a table right on the beach. Aloft Aloha delivers exactly that without unnecessary flourishes. It's priced accessibly, the vibe is unpretentious, and the location on Palm Jumeirah means you're still getting those postcard-worthy sunset views. Perfect for couples who want to mark the occasion without the pressure of an overly orchestrated evening. Price: AED 799 per couple Reserve: 052 609 3371 or email restaurants.aloftpalm@alofthotels.com The Intimate Option Charm Thai, Crowne Plaza Dubai Marina Here's a smart move: Crowne Plaza is stretching Valentine's into an entire week (February 9–16), which means you can sidestep the February 14th rush entirely if you prefer. Their Thai restaurant, Charm Thai, goes all-in on the theme with red balloon installations and roses—red is significant in Thai culture, symbolising both passion and good fortune, which is why couples traditionally wear it on Valentine's Day. Every woman receives a red rose upon arrival, and there's a 360-degree photo setup that captures the evening from every angle, with a personalised video sent to you afterwards. Price: from AED 499 per couple Date: 9–16 February Reserve: Visit ihg.com/crowneplaza At.mosphere, Burj Khalifa There's breakfast, and then there's breakfast 442 metres above the city. At.mosphere wraps you in 360-degree views while you work through a menu that includes golden Viennoiserie, European cheeses, artisanal charcuterie, and dishes like Bruxelloise waffles topped with Chantilly cream. The experience is about scale—watching Dubai wake up from this height changes your relationship to the city somehow. Everything feels both vast and intimate at once. Price: from AED 450 per person Reserve: +971 4 888 3828 or visit atmosphererestaurant.com Viceroy's Table If you're looking for a dinner spot that feels special without trying too hard, Viceroy's Table has quietly become one of the city's most reliable choices for romance. The interiors are warm and inviting—low lighting, elegant without being stuffy—and the Anglo-Indian menu strikes a balance between nostalgic and contemporary. Slow-cooked Champaran Mutton, flambéed Lobster Thermidor prepared tableside (always a crowd-pleaser), Calcutta Club Tomato Soup that arrives with a bit of theater. It's the kind of place where you end up staying longer than planned because the conversation flows and nobody's rushing you along. À la carte dining Reserve: +971 56 546 6600 or visit www.viceroystable.com Roberto's, DIFC Roberto's reopened on January 31st after an extensive refurbishment, and the result is a restaurant that feels both familiar and notably sharper. The kitchen spent time training under Chef Enrico Bartolini in Italy—he holds more Michelin stars than any other Italian chef—and that influence shows in the new menu's ingredient-led approach. The interiors now channel Milanese mid-century design—clean lines, sculpted stone, rich wood. What makes this work for Valentine's is the generosity: portions are designed for sharing, the traditional dessert trolley encourages lingering, and the entire experience feels built around the pleasure of spending time at the table. À la carte dining Visit robertosrestaurants.com more details. Private Yacht Experience, Rixos Premium Dubai Sometimes romance means leaving land entirely. Rixos Premium Dubai offers private yacht charters that cruise along the Arabian Gulf with sweeping views of JBR, Dubai Marina, Ain Dubai, and the architectural curve of Bluewaters Island. You're not locked into any particular itinerary—bring your own playlist, anchor for a swim in crystal-clear water, or simply let the city glide by at its own pace. The professional crew handles all the details. It's the kind of experience that works for intimate couples'outings and larger friend groups alike, which is why the yacht accommodates up to ten guests. Price: AED 1,200 per hour Reserve: Call 04 520 0000 or email reservation.premiumdubai@rixos.com Lady Nara: No Phones, Just Us Here's a concept that feels both radical and obvious: a phone-free dinner. Upon boarding Lady Nara—Dubai's first luxury bistro-style dhow—you ceremoniously place your phone into the Captain's Vault, where it stays locked for the duration of the evening. What you get instead is presence. A four-course menu that includes a specially created Valentine's dessert, instant photos captured the old-fashioned way (tangible, not swipeable). The dhow glides across moonlit water while you actually talk to the person across from you, uninterrupted by notifications or the compulsion to check your screen. At the end of the night, you retrieve your phone along with a video of moments you might not have noticed because you were too busy being in them. It's a small gesture that makes a surprisingly large impact. Price: AED 490 per adult 14 February | 8pm–10pm Reserve: https://www.nara.ae/ The Alternative Route Raspoutine, DIFC If your ideal Valentine's involves red velvet banquettes, live entertainment, and a touch of Parisian seduction, Raspoutine has built an entire evening around exactly that. The DIFC venue leans into maximum romance—think flowers on every table, and the kind of dramatic ambiance that makes even casual conversations feel more significant. It's not subtle, but that's precisely the point. The full dining experience comes with live entertainment woven throughout the evening, so expect music, energy, and a crowd that's here to see and be seen. Price: AED 550 per person Reserve: Visit raspoutine.dubai Paris Paradis, Taj Dubai The newest addition to Dubai's cultural landscape opened in January, and it's already generating significant buzz. Paris Paradis is the Dubai incarnation of Paradis Latin, the 200-year-old Parisian cabaret founded under Napoleon and later rebuilt by Gustave Eiffel. This isn't dinner theater in the tired sense—it's a full-scale production choreographed by Kamel Ouali, featuring an ensemble of elite performers selected from over 2,500 candidates globally. Paris Paradis is a big night out—glamorous, immersive, and decidedly theatrical. Reserve: Call +971 56 705 7075, email reservation@paris-paradis.ae UBK, Mövenpick Hotel JLT: Anti-Valentine's For anyone who'd rather skip the roses-and-romance narrative entirely, UBK has created an Anti-Valentine's experience. The set menu focuses on what actually matters: good food, well-curated drinks, and a lively atmosphere that doesn't take itself too seriously. No heart-shaped desserts, no couples-only seating arrangements, just solid cooking and a crowd that's here for the meal rather than the sentiment. Running alongside this is U-B-Kinky, a walk-in-only concept that leans even further into spontaneity—bold bites, and an energy that's decidedly social rather than structured. Both options work equally well for singles, friend groups, or couples who'd prefer to celebrate without all the traditional trappings. Price: from AED 225 per person Date: 13–15 February Reserve: Call +971 4 438 0064 or email FB.Reservations@movenpick.com Jebel Jais If candlelit dinners and beachside romance aren't really your speed, consider heading in the complete opposite direction—literally. Jebel Jais, the UAE's highest mountain, reopened just in time for peak winter season, and it's offering a completely different kind of Valentine's experience. Think hiking trails, cycling routes, and Jais Flight, which remains the world's longest zipline. There's also 1484 by Puro, the country's highest restaurant, for those who want altitude with their meal. The cooler February weather creates ideal conditions for outdoor adventure, and there's something refreshingly honest about celebrating connection through fresh mountain air and shared discovery rather than prix-fixe menus. Plus, the views from this height tend to put everything else into perspective. Visit visitjebeljais.com for reservations and updates

  • Inside the Labubu Craze: How This Toothy Toy Took Over the UAE's Cool Crowd

Inside the Labubu Craze: How This Toothy Toy Took Over the UAE's Cool Crowd by Khadija husain 29 May 2025 It’s got sharp teeth, wild hair, and a half-creepy, half-cute grin. It doesn’t speak, it doesn’t move, and it fits in your hand. Still, Labubu — a mischievous figurine from Chinese toy empire Pop Mart — has become the accessory of the moment. From TikTok to boutique shelves, Dubai is deep in a Labubu fever. If it hasn’t hit you yet, it will. You’ve probably spotted one already — clipped onto a Prada bag at Dubai Mall or casually flexed in an unboxing haul on your feed. Maybe you’ve stood in line at The Little Things, or cracked open a blind box just to chase that elusive rare. No matter how it found you, one thing’s certain: Labubu is everywhere, and this craze isn’t slowing down. What Exactly Is Labubu? Think of a forest sprite that walked straight out of a surreal dream — with big, curious eyes, untamed hair, and tiny fanged teeth. Designed by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung as part of The Monsters series, Labubu is the anti-cute toy: odd, expressive, and proudly imperfect. It doesn’t aim to be pretty — it aims to be unforgettable. Released by Pop Mart, the company fueling Asia’s blind-box boom, Labubu stands out in a sea of polished collectibles. It’s not symmetrical or sweet. It’s strange, raw, and entirely its own thing. And in a digital world obsessed with aesthetics, that’s precisely why people are obsessed. How Labubu Took Over the UAE It all escalated in April 2025, when Pop Mart dropped the Big Into Energy Labubu series. Local toy stores were flooded overnight — collectors buying boxes in bulk, hoping to score a rare pull. The Little Things, Pop Mart’s official distributor in the region, saw daily queues wrap around the block. Most stores sold out within days. Suddenly, Labubu was everywhere — hanging from handbags, stacked into colour-coded displays, starring in TikTok reels. Despite its size, the toy carried serious weight. It became a flex, a cultural currency, a status symbol for the digitally fluent and taste-forward. Inside the Blind Box Economy Here’s the catch: you can’t pick your Labubu. Each figurine comes sealed in a blind box — you open it without knowing which design’s inside. It could be a common one. It could be ultra-rare. You’re gambling with each purchase — and collectors are addicted. Each box retails at AED 79, but rare editions are reselling for AED 350 or more. Full drops vanish in minutes. Labubu’s not just a toy anymore — it’s part lottery, part collectible, part cultural stock market. TikTok, Careem, and the Viral Push Much of the hype is thanks to TikTok. Search #labubu or #popmartlabubu and you’ll find ASMR-style unboxings, rare reveals, and collectors showing off entire armies of figurines. It’s gone so viral that even Careem got involved — launching limited-time Labubu deliveries in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. For AED 305, fans could have blind boxes delivered to their door within 20 minutes. The entire run sold out in hours. Scarcity + instant gratification + digital clout = cultural takeover. More Than a Toy — It’s a Mirror Labubu’s success isn’t just about hype. It’s about identity. In a hyper-curated world, there’s something personal about owning a creature that’s messy, odd, and expressive. People see themselves in it — or the version of themselves that refuses to be polished. It’s not just a collectible. It’s a mood. The Resale Rush Is Real With resellers flipping figures for triple the retail price, and knockoffs like “Lafufu” already circulating, the market is exploding. One collector reportedly dropped AED 5,000 chasing the full set. Entire pop-up launches are selling out in under an hour. This isn’t a trend — it’s a frenzy. So, What Now? Like every cultural wave, this one will eventually plateau. But for now, Labubu is more than just a figure — it’s a statement. A little rebel tucked in your palm. And in the UAE, it’s officially the latest badge of cool. Let me know if you’d like this adapted for Instagram as well. Feature images courtesy Instagram/ @jawahralsuwaidi

Presented by the Design Council Abu Dhabi (DCAD) in collaboration with Italian porcelain house Ginori 1735, and produced by Gushcloud International, this second residency cycle positions the capital as a meeting point between tradition and innovation. Hosted at the creative workshop MAKE, it brings together the craftsmanship of the Emirates with the timeless artistry of Italy. “ We are proud to facilitate this partnership and continue fostering a world-class creative ecosystem in Abu Dhabi, ” shares Althea Lim, Group CEO and Co-Founder of Gushcloud International. “ This residency reinforces the region’s role in global design dialogue and offers real pathways for talent to emerge on the world stage. ” Guided under the chairwomanship of Her Highness Shaikha Shamsa Bint Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, DCAD remains committed to empowering a new generation of designers. This new residency invites 10–15 UAE nationals and residents, men and women, who are already practicing or exploring ceramics and pottery. Over six months, participants will immerse themselves in a curriculum spanning studio practice, sustainability, design theory, and masterclasses. A highlight includes a two-hour session with Ginori 1735’s Creative Director, offering insights into the Italian house’s approach to design excellence. The program is more than training it is a journey of storytelling through clay. Each resident will create an original ceramic collection inspired by both Emirati and Italian traditions, a dialogue between two cultures shaped into tangible form. The journey culminates in a Capstone Exhibition in late 2026, where works will be unveiled to the press, patrons, and collectors. For select residents, the opportunity extends beyond Abu Dhabi with an internship at Ginori 1735’s headquarters in Florence, a chance to step into the heart of European craftsmanship. • The Modern Host’s Guide to Table Styling

By Chrissie Rucker OBE, Founder of The White Company The Modern Host’s Guide to Table Styling By Chrissie Rucker OBE, Founder of The White Company by Khadija Husain 1 May 2025 There’s something undeniably special about a thoughtfully styled dining table—it sets the tone, sparks conversation, and lingers in memory long after the last bite. Whether it’s a weekday dinner or a festive gathering, the modern host understands that how we present our tables is a reflection of the care and character we bring to any occasion. To decode the art of table styling with timeless elegance and a minimalist touch, we turned to Chrissie Rucker OBE, Founder of The White Company, whose signature aesthetic has elevated modern homes around the world. Design with Intention “The key is to match the mood and purpose of the occasion,” Chrissie says. For formal gatherings, it’s all about polished details—beaded placemats, tall candlesticks, sparkling glassware, and layers of soft linens that instantly add sophistication. In contrast, casual meals call for a more relaxed touch: think uncovered wooden tables, fresh herbs as centerpieces, and the soft flicker of tealight candles. “A well-set table should feel inviting, practical, and thoughtfully designed,” she adds. “It’s about creating an experience that feels as good as it looks Minimalism with Meaning While minimalism often risks feeling bare, Chrissie infuses it with warmth and soul. “Minimalism is about thoughtful choices,” she explains. “I stick to a single color palette—often white with soft greenery—and add texture through materials like linen napkins and ribbed glassware.” The result? Understated elegance that feels considered rather than sparse. Details like a rosemary sprig tucked into a napkin bring subtle charm that delights without overwhelming. The Essentials of Elegance Chrissie’s toolkit for a versatile and elevated table is refreshingly simple. “White linen tablecloths and napkins are timeless. Classic white china lets the food take center stage, while ribbed or clear glassware reflects light beautifully.” Her favorite accessories? A mix of clear glass and mercury candle holders for a hint of sparkle. “Everything should work together to create an elegant, welcoming space.” Plates, Cutlery & Glassware “Plates set the foundation for the dining experience,” says Chrissie. Organic shapes suggest ease and informality, while structured or square styles bring modern flair. Textured finishes, especially in matte tones, lend warmth to casual settings. When it comes to glassware, Chrissie recommends delicate stemmed glasses for formal events and versatile stemless options for relaxed affairs. “Ribbed or etched glassware catches the light beautifully. Tall tumblers for mocktails or juices bring freshness and height to the table.” “Cutlery is often overlooked, but it makes a huge difference,” Chrissie shares. “Weighty, balanced pieces add a sense of occasion. For formal settings, polished silver or gold-tone finishes elevate the experience, while brushed or matte cutlery suits a more contemporary, casual vibe.” She also recommends investing in a few versatile accents that can work across seasons and occasions: beaded placemats for texture, mirrored runners for added light, and a mix of clear and mercury glass candle holders for sparkle. Designing for Practicality and Beauty A well-styled table should never compromise on functionality. “Keep your centerpieces low—small floral arrangements, scattered greenery, or even bowls of seasonal fruit work beautifully without obstructing views or taking up too much space,” Chrissie advises. “You want your guests to connect easily across the table.” Candles are essential, but choose varying heights to create visual dimension without clutter. “Balance is everything,” she notes. “It’s about layering thoughtfully, without overwhelming the space.” Seasonal Sensibility When it comes to colour, white is Chrissie’s go-to for its calming versatility. But she adds seasonal nuances with ease. “In winter, I love introducing metallic accents and lush greenery for a sense of warmth. In spring or summer, soft pastels and natural textures like seagrass or raffia bring a lighter, breezier energy.” Patterns, if used, are kept subtle—never stealing the spotlight from the food or ambiance. Creating Cohesion So how does one achieve a cohesive look that still feels dynamic? According to Chrissie, it’s all about contrast and harmony. “Stick to a cohesive colour palette, but mix up your textures—pair smooth porcelain with ribbed glass, or combine metallic accents with linen napkins. Let one or two elements stand out while everything else complements the story.” Lighting is another tool not to be underestimated. “A mix of tall and low candles adds atmosphere and movement. For outdoor or festive settings, fairy lights are perfect—they add charm and a soft glow that’s hard to beat.” The Magic of Lighting Lighting, Chrissie believes, is transformative. “A mix of tall and low candles creates a magical, layered glow.” For alfresco or festive settings, she adores fairy lights. “Candlelight not only enhances the beauty of the table, but also makes everyone feel relaxed and welcome.” Start Small, Style Big For those just beginning their table styling journey, Chrissie offers the perfect starting point. “Begin with a simple white linen runner, a few well-placed candles, and a touch of greenery or florals. Even something as small as a sprig of rosemary on each napkin can create an elevated, personal feel.” The takeaway? You don’t need an abundance of elements to create impact—just intention, care, and a few timeless pieces that speak to your style.
