Sophia Riad 11 May 2026 Lisbon is bustling. Porto is lively. The Algarve, in parts, has been developed. However, only 45 minutes from Lisbon, a quieter Portugal still exists unseen by most visitors. In the villages and river valleys of Ribatejo, daily life continues to revolve around agriculture and traditional crafts. Potters work from studios attached to their homes. Olive gardens produce for families, not for export. Horses are bred, trained and known by name. Evenings unfold around tables where fado forms part of the night — not as a ticketed experience, but simply as what happens after dinner. It is a region largely absent from international itineraries, and that, says Valeriia Korolenko, is precisely why she chose it. “People travel further and further to find something real,” she says. “It’s here. It’s been here the whole time.” Korolenko’s own path runs through some of the most storied addresses in hospitality — The Savoy, Beaverbrook, The Doyle Collection, and the Four Seasons. Across those years, she paid close attention to what well-travelled guests actually remembered when they came home. Not the landmark, dutifully photographed. Not the restaurant, carefully chosen in advance. Something quieter, and considerably harder to book. “The moments that stayed with people were rarely the grandest,” she says. “They were the most personal ones. A shared meal. An invitation into someone’s studio. A conversation that lasted longer than the wine.” Those observations eventually became a company. My Simple Portugal six small-group, hosted journeys across central Portugal, each one built on exactly the kind of encounter Korolenko spent years watching guests treasure. The programme is focused on the Ribatejo — a region still largely absent from international travel — and is built on relationships with artisans, horse breeders, fado singers and farming families developed over years, not arranged for paying guests. “You cannot engineer those moments,” she says. “But you can create the conditions for them.” A day with My Simple Portugal might begin in a ceramicist’s studio, where techniques passed down over generations are still practised in the same room where they were learned. It might continue through olive groves with the family that has farmed them for three generations, tastings taken beside the press rather than in a tasting room. It might end at a table where a fado singer performs not on a stage, but in her own dining room, for a group of eight. “There is a warmth and generosity in this region,” Korolenko says, “but also a very strong sense of identity — in the food, the craft, the music. I wanted to create something that allows people to step into that world naturally.” Groups are kept deliberately small, and itineraries are shaped around people rather than schedules. Each of the six journeys can stand alone or be woven into a longer stay, with overnight accommodation through a network of boutique hotels and local guesthouses across the region. Private transfers are included throughout, and all are available from May 2026, from €350 per person. THE SIX JOURNEYS Artisans of Ribatejo Craft in the Ribatejo has never become heritage. Ceramicists, textile makers and small-scale producers still work from studios attached to their homes, techniques handed down across generations. Guests spend time inside working ateliers — observing, taking part in selected stages under guidance, and talking over coffee about how these practices continue today. Fado & Gastronomy Lunch at a local artisanal farm is followed by an evening in the home of a fado singer, where dinner and music take place in the same room. In Almeirim, sopa da pedra is still prepared in the same kitchens and served without reinvention. A guided visit to Tomar adds historical depth to a day already full of stories. Olive Groves Walking the groves with the families who farm them offers a direct understanding of harvest cycles, pressing methods and small-scale production. Tastings take place at source — beside the mill, next to the barrel — followed by a farm lunch or aperitif hosted on site. Lusitano Horseback Adventures The Lusitano is one of Portugal’s most recognised cultural symbols, with the Ribatejo at the centre of its breeding and training. Guests visit a working stud farm, spend time with breeders learning about the lineage and care of the horses, and — depending on experience — ride or work in the paddocks before lunch at the quinta. River Zêzere Boat & Paddle The Zêzere cuts through one of the region’s most varied landscapes, reaching places roads do not. Exploration is by boat or paddleboard with local guides, moving between wooded banks and small islands, with swim stops built in and simple riverside snacks along the way. Culinary Heritage A full day moving between farms, producers and traditional kitchens in Almeirim and Santarém, tracing where the food actually comes from. Both lunch and dinner are included, alongside a guided visit to Tomar — a town whose history adds unexpected context to the meal that follows. The question My Simple Portugal is really asking is an old one: what do we actually want from travel? Korolenko’s answer is simple, and she has spent years making it possible to find. “It’s a region full of colour and stories,” she says of the Ribatejo. “It deserves to be experienced beyond the usual routes.” The Ribatejo has those things in abundance. It always has. It simply needed someone willing to make the introductions.

It was where a city did its living: where people bought bread and oil, traded news, argued about politics and lingered long after their errands were done. It is an ambitious name for a restaurant, promising a kind of everyday ease that design alone cannot manufacture. Ergon Agora lives up to the name. Spread across some 2,000 square metres at Boulevard Heights on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard, it gathers five concepts under one roof: the main Agora Restaurant, the 72H bakery, the Tzeneral patisserie, the 1990s-flavoured Balboa and Ergon Originals, a shop stocked with Greek pantry goods. It is the brand’s first Agora outside Greece, and it feels less like a restaurant with a deli attached than a small neighbourhood that happens to have a roof. The story begins in Thessaloniki. Brothers Thomas and George Douzis grew up around their grandfather’s grocery in the city. Nearly two decades ago, they set out to build on that inheritance: bringing together the best of Greece’s small producers and presenting their work with a contemporary sensibility. The name they chose, ergon, means work or vocation, and also the thing that work produces. Today the brand reaches from Greece and Cyprus to the UK and the Gulf, yet the founding instinct survives intact. Here, the shelves still come first. We arrived early on a Monday evening and dined inside, but not before doing what the space so plainly invites: wandering. The 72H counter takes its name from the long, slow fermentation behind its sourdough. Tzeneral offers pastries and desserts in the spirit of the old neighbourhood patisseries of Greece. The Ergon Originals shelves are lined with olive oils, honeys and spices from small producers, the kind of jars that find their way into your basket before you have quite decided to buy them. All of it is designed in-house by Ergon Atelier, the brand’s own creative studio, and the result has a rare coherence. The shelving, bakery counters, and dining room share one design language, so moving from one to the next feels entirely natural. The menu reads like a tour of the Greek table, and we began where any Greek would: with bread and something to drag through it. The assorted spreads arrive with sourdough flatbread and a generous line-up: Kalamata olive tapenade, cool tzatziki, tirokafteri with its gentle feta-and-chilli warmth, briny taramosalata and silky melitzanosalata. It is the kind of spread that turns a table quiet for a few minutes, then sets everyone debating which one was best. Peinirli, the boat-shaped flatbread so loved in Thessaloniki, is made here with handmade sourdough, and our lahmatzoun version came laden with beef and lamb mince, melted Graviera and a cool spoonful of yoghurt. Crisp at the edges and soft at its heart, it was the first plate we cleared. Then came the Graviera wrapped in kataifi, the fine shredded pastry that shatters at the first touch of a fork, finished with spicy honey and a scattering of pistachio. Salty, sweet, hot and crunchy all at once, it is the dish we would send a friend back for. Souvlaki is Greece’s great everyday food, and therefore the easiest to get wrong. Ergon’s chicken version, marinated in Greek yoghurt and finished with a sharp lemon and olive oil sauce, gets it exactly right: tender, lightly charred and bright with citrus. The soutzoukakia were better still. These spiced beef and lamb meatballs, a recipe that came to Greece with refugees from Smyrna in the 1920s, arrive in a deep tomato sauce over pita, with Greek yoghurt alongside to cool things down. None of this is cooking that wants to be reinvented, and that is precisely its strength. It is generous, unfussy and wholly sincere: familiar Greek dishes, cooked with care and allowed to speak for themselves. Every plate tastes of where it comes from. Dessert is where Tzeneral, the agora’s patisserie, takes over, and it is worth saving room for. The orange pie is a take on portokalopita, the fragrant orange phyllo cake found in Greek homes and neighbourhood bakeries alike, served here with vanilla ice cream. Sticky and fragrant with orange, it is a comforting take on a much-loved classic. The pistachio baklava, layered phyllo and nuts in the time-honoured way and paired with pistachio ice cream, made a fitting finale: nutty, honeyed and unmistakably Greek. The agora runs from morning until late, and the brunch menu, served daily until 3pm, is reason enough to come back. Think strapatsada, Greek scrambled eggs with spicy sausage and yoghurt on phyllo, or poached eggs on a sesame koulouri with spicy butter, plus a loaf from 72H to take home. Dubai has no shortage of Greek restaurants, but Ergon Agora offers something more than dinner. The cooking stays close to its roots, while the bakery, patisserie and pantry give the place a life beyond the table. It is somewhere to settle in for a long meal, browse the shelves and leave with a little of Greece to take home, which is exactly what an agora should be. The Rave verdict: Honest Greek cooking, a pantry worth raiding and a dessert counter worth the detour. Order the kataifi-wrapped Graviera, save room for the orange pie, and leave with a bottle of olive oil under your arm. From a homegrown café returning to its Jumeirah roots and a London dining favourite making its Dubai debut to new creative spaces, fitness destinations and international brands entering the market, there's plenty to catch up on. Here are 11 additions worth having on your radar this month. 1. Third Avenue, Sharjah Third Avenue has opened a more intimate outpost in Sharjah, swapping the scale of its Fashion Avenue address for a 25-seat restaurant in Al Qarayen, with soft curves, warm lighting, a circular centrepiece counter and a curved glass wall looking into Khaltat Boutique next door. That means dinner can easily turn into a fragrance stop. On the Italian–Mediterranean menu, look for the Beetroot Carpaccio, Bergamot Rigatoni and Truffle Mascarpone Pizza, then finish with the pistachio Oro Verde. Founded by Lebanese basketball legend Fadi El Khatib, Club 15 is set to open in Al Quoz this month, spanning 15,000sqm. The name is a nod to his jersey number, now worn by his sons, while the facilities include a two-floor gym, rooftop training deck, seven indoor padel courts and three full-size basketball courts. Recovery gets its own considerable space, with a 25-metre heated pool, ice baths, an infrared sauna and a dedicated physiotherapy clinic. There's also Reformer Pilates, boxing, yoga and a range of children's activities, from parkour to gymnastics and youth academies. TRIO Café, Jumeirah TRIO has returned to where it all began. Its very first site, a 2021 drive-through on 22nd Street, has been rebuilt as a full café in the brand's signature language of curves and three materials. Come for the single-origin V60 pour-overs and the marble matcha range from its sub-brand Cult Matcha. Kricket, Vida Emirates Hills One for the diary. Kricket started in 2015 as a 20-seat restaurant in a shipping container at Pop Brixton, grew into four London neighbourhood spots, and won a Michelin Bib Gourmand for its Soho site in its first year. Now it’s heading to Vida Emirates Hills, its first permanent home outside the UK. Expect its signature approach to regional Indian cooking, seasonal ingredients and sharing plates. Co-founder Will Bowlby is developing the Dubai menu alongside Colin Clague, whose CV includes Zuma Dubai and Burj Al Arab. Bluewaters x Studio Thirteen, Dubai Seven artist-led galleries have opened at The Wharf on Bluewaters as part of Dubai Culture's Creative Spaces initiative. They're curated with Studio Thirteen, the Al Quoz artist studio, and each artist was given free rein over their own space. Look out for work by Rania Kamal, Athy Petrochilos, Rabab Tantawy and Fink 22, spanning calligraphy, murals, photography and installation. Free to visit, the galleries are open daily until December, with monthly workshops, hands-on sessions and artist talks adding another reason to return. Em Sherif Deli has opened its third UAE location, and its first outside Dubai, at Al Mutarid Lifestyle Centre, following One Central and Galleria Mall. The Deli concept began in London’s Harrods Food Hall in 2022, and the Al Ain space is all blonde wood, earthy tones and warm lighting across 50 seats indoors and out. Chef Yasmina Hayek's menu takes a more casual approach, with shawarma, mezze, sandwiches and homemade desserts available to eat in or take away. The appeal lies in everyday pieces: stackable rings, layered necklaces, and jewellery designed to be worn on repeat rather than saved for an occasion. As the evening progresses, a live DJ shifts the mood from dinner to a late-night outing, making it an address worth keeping in mind for more than just the sushi.
